A SEROPTICS Desk, Not a Party Brand: Editorial Independence Notes

Nightlife Report desk

Nightlife Report is part of the SEROPTICS group, and our about page says so. The same group runs OTTE Models, a hospitality talent desk, and LILLITH, a fashion-film and stills desk. Readers deserve to know how a nightlife news desk keeps its coverage independent when sister desks work in the same rooms. This post sets out the rules.

Disclosure first

When a story involves a venue, event, or organization that a SEROPTICS desk has worked with, the story says so. Disclosure is not a confession; it is context. Readers can weigh the coverage knowing the relationship exists. If a disclosure would be needed and the reporter is unsure, the default is to disclose.

Coverage is not for sale

Nightlife Report does not sell coverage. A venue cannot book OTTE talent or a LILLITH shoot and receive a story in return. Stories are chosen on news value: is it new, is it significant to LA nightlife, and can it be sourced and dated. Paid promotion, if it ever appears, will be labeled clearly and kept separate from reporting.

No soft treatment for sister desks

If a sister desk is part of a newsworthy story, including a critical one, Nightlife Report applies the same standards it applies to anyone: sources, dates, a fair chance to respond, and public corrections. A news desk that only covers its owners favorably is a marketing channel, and readers would be right to treat it as one.

The founder’s role

Founder Anthony Perlas is an LA photographer and runs the SEROPTICS group. Readers should know that. Reports are bylined to the Nightlife Report desk and follow published editorial standards. When the founder’s own work is the subject, the relationship is disclosed in the story.

Separate doors, separate jobs

OTTE books hospitality talent. LILLITH produces film and stills. Nightlife Report reports. Each desk has its own site, rules, and contacts. Keeping them separate protects readers from confusing coverage with sales.

How readers can hold us to this

If you think a story shows favoritism or missed a disclosure, email anthony@nightlifereport.app. We will review it and publish a correction or note if warranted.

Why it matters

Independence is the reason a news desk is worth reading at all. We would rather lose a relationship than lose that.

A practical example

Suppose a venue that once hired OTTE talent announces a closure. Nightlife Report would report the closure with the same sourcing as any other story and add a short line disclosing the past relationship. It would not soften the details, omit the news, or delay it. Disclosure changes nothing about the reporting itself; it simply tells readers what they need to know to judge it.

Keeping the business and the newsroom apart

Booking conversations happen on the OTTE and LILLITH desks, through their own contact paths. Story decisions happen on the Nightlife Report desk. When the same founder sits above both, the separation depends on written rules and visible disclosure, which is why we publish both rather than asking readers to assume good faith.
