Ghost Lashes, Stained-Glass Lips and the Death of Contour: Fall’s Makeup Rules, Decoded Coast to Coast

Ghost lashes, stained-glass lips, anti-blush and the end of contour: fall 2026 makeup trends, decoded with NYC and LA makeup artists.

The memo went out this fall, and it reads like a breakup text to your falsies: it’s not you, it’s me, and I’m going bare. Between the trend reports and the threads, the season’s beauty story is about doing less, doing it better and letting one feature carry the whole look.

We read the reports, scrolled the subreddits and, naturally, picked a side.

Lashes: all or nothing

Cosmopolitan named “ghost lashes” a top fall look: completely bare lashes. NYC makeup artist Dani Parkes told the magazine that “full lashes are out” and that many of her clients don’t want her bringing falsies to appointments now. Parkes’s clients include Maddie Ziegler, Whitney Leavitt and Gabby Windey. If you want a little help, she suggests just a kiss of mascara on the tips and outer corners.

Allure went the other way and spotted sculptural lashes: wet-look clusters and spiky, editorial shapes. NYC artist Christian Briceno told Allure that lashes lately are either completely bare or highly sculptural.

The middle ground is dead. Choose your fighter.

Reddit’s r/MakeupAddiction is already testing the edges. A “White mascara!! (Yay or Nay?)” thread made the month’s top posts, alongside a full Twiggy recreation. The lash conversation is officially weird, and we love it.

Lips: stain, don’t paint

Both magazines landed on the same idea from different angles. Cosmo calls it “stained-glass lips”: translucent, glossy color with your natural lip peeking through, replacing matte and vinyl this season. Allure calls it berry-tinted lips. Briceno says people “want more visible color, but many do not want the maintenance of an opaque dark lipstick.”

Allure also flagged “lips only”: a bare face and one strong lipstick. LA makeup artist Sarah Walsh told the magazine she saw it on fall and winter runways and called it “a high-contrast look that exudes confidence and power.”

Your fellow readers are on the case. A r/MakeupAddiction thread asking for help identifying Florence Pugh’s lipstick was a top post this month. Over on r/beauty, someone wanted the “strongest lip stain to last all night 😉.” We see you.

Cheeks: blush won the contour war (sort of)

NYC makeup artist Joseph Carrillo told Allure he expects to skip harsh contour and bronzer this season in favor of more blush: berry, rose, nude and terracotta, blended high to create lift.

Cosmo countered with anti-blush: a cool, muted cheek that barely reads, the opposite of years of babydoll pink. So one camp is going cheekier and the other is going stealth. Contour is the only one not invited.

Eyes: one wash, soft smoke

  • Mineral-wash shadow (Allure): a single cool, earthy shade like slate, pewter, mushroom or greige.
  • G-rated smoky eye (Allure): espresso, olive, plum and charcoal, blended until there are no harsh edges. LA artist Nikki DeRoest suggests working a dark pencil into the lash roots and smudging it out.
  • Soft smoke with a “foxy” liner that sweeps down or out (Cosmo).
  • Casual blues in faded denim or aquamarine, plus iced-out inner corners (Cosmo).

That one-shade energy is already all over Reddit. “i’m addicted to one-colored eye makeup!” was a top r/MakeupAddiction post this month.

Skin: you, but rested

Allure’s balmy sheen puts glow only where it helps (cheekbones and temples) and keeps everything else controlled. Its skin-first look leaves the freckles out. NYC artist Priscilla DiStasio told the magazine, “I love that you still look like you.”

That fits the mood on r/SkincareAddiction, where one top post this month argued that skincare culture “has started to brainwash us.” The audience wants results, not a 14-step guilt trip.

The NY vs. LA read

The interesting part: the NYC artists in these reports keep talking about restraint and control, while the LA voices talk about contrast and the runway. Our unscientific take is that New York wears the stain to the office, and LA wears the bold lip to the Kia Forum. Both are correct.

Also on the vanity

  • Lilac nails are flagged as fall’s surprise nail color, and blunt bobs lead Allure’s winter hair report. A celebrity bob roundup this week suggests the chop is already happening.
  • Scam watch: r/MakeupAddiction posted a “heads up” about one indie brand, and r/beauty asked “is my sunscreen fake?” Details are unconfirmed, so buy from authorized retailers.
