Let’s set the scene. On Reddit’s r/povertyfinance, a $33 large pepperoni was a top post this month. In LA, r/LosAngeles is fuming about a sales-tax increase. Over on r/AskWomen, women piled into one question: “What’s a tiny luxury you refuse to give up, no matter how tight money gets?” Skincare came up. Of course it did.
Here’s the good news, darling: fall 2026’s trends are the cheapest in years. You just have to know which ones.
The trends that cost (almost) nothing
Ghost lashes = $0. Cosmopolitan says completely bare lashes are one of fall’s top looks, and NYC makeup artist Dani Parkes told the magazine that “full lashes are out.” Skip the falsies, skip the glue and skip the removal at 2 a.m. That’s the most profitable trend on this list.
The stain is the whole look. Cosmo’s “stained-glass lips” call for translucent, glossy color, and the magazine names e.l.f.’s Glossy Lip Stain as one way to get there. Allure’s berry-tint trend says your natural lip color should “participate.” That’s NYC artist Christian Briceno’s word. Less product, more you. (We couldn’t confirm current retail prices, so check before you buy.)
One shadow, one swipe. Allure’s “mineral-wash” eye is a single cool shade across the lid. One of the picks from LA artist Sarah Walsh is Kiko Milano’s Water Eyeshadow in Dark Grey. On r/MakeupAddiction, “i’m addicted to one-colored eye makeup!” was a top post. One pan, many nights out.
Anti-blush means using what you’ve got. Cosmo’s anti-blush is a muted cheek close to your natural skin tone. Translation: the neutral you already own probably works.
Reddit’s frugal-beauty commandments
1. Read the net weight, not the hype. A top r/MakeupAddiction post this month was literally “Just a reminder to check the amount of product! Drugstore vs High End.” Price per gram is the only luxury metric that matters.
2. Rescue the last of it. r/beauty’s hit thread “The amount of lipstick can be rescued after removing the stopper is insane” did numbers. Save the bullet and grab a lip brush.
3. Respect the mascara clock. Someone on r/beauty wished mascara could last longer than the three months you’re supposed to keep it. Another reason ghost lashes are winning: one fewer tube to replace.
4. Find the dupe for the splurge. “Has anyone found a decent cleansing balm that is affordable?” was a top r/beauty ask. On r/SkincareAddiction, a widely upvoted review called La Roche-Posay’s Cicaplast Baume B5 a holy grail after years of trying countless creams.
5. Don’t buy the scare, and don’t buy the fake. r/beauty asked “is my sunscreen fake?” and r/SkincareAddiction posted a scam PSA about one company. We couldn’t confirm those claims, so buy from authorized retailers. If a deal looks too good, it is.
6. Use less, irritate less. Top PSAs this month: please do not put tretinoin under your eyes, and those “crumbs” from Korean peeling gels aren’t just dead skin. One post also argued that skincare culture “has started to brainwash us.” Sometimes the budget move is the healthy one: fewer steps.
The NY vs. LA budget play
New York: Before you spend on a night out, spend nothing on the day. In an r/AskNYC thread for broke New Yorkers, commenters recommended a library card plus Culture Pass for free cultural admissions, pay-what-you-wish museums and the free Chelsea galleries. Do your face for the gallery crawl. It’s still a look. And the new NYC “Click to Cancel” rule that hit r/nyc’s top posts might finally free you from that subscription box you stopped opening in June. We’re confirming the fine print.
Los Angeles: Glam for the free stuff. LA Opera streamed Carmen‘s opening night free at Santa Monica Pier this month, per LAmag. Next up, Time Out LA says Grand Ave Arts: All Access returns Downtown on Oct. 25 with free workshops and live music. A bold lip and nothing else, which Allure says is trending, is made for a free night under the lights.
The bottom line
Looking expensive in 2026 isn’t about spending more. It’s about doing less on purpose: bare lashes, one stain, one shadow and skin that looks like yours. Keep the tiny luxury, whatever yours is. Cut everything else.
