Let’s be honest about the vibe this month. Safety stories have dominated the women’s corners of the internet. On r/TwoXChromosomes, the Cornell assault case and the wider conversation about consent have filled the top posts for weeks. On r/nyc, a story about a New York City college student who prosecutors say was drugged and raped was among the month’s most-shared posts. On r/LosAngeles, a “Ladies beware” post about a man harassing a woman at The Grove got traction.
So this isn’t a fear piece. It’s an insider’s guide to going out smart, starting with what the law actually requires of your bar.
Los Angeles: your bar has to have test kits
In California, bars and nightclubs holding a Type 48 license must make drug-testing devices for drink spiking available to customers. Venues can offer them free or at a reasonable price tied to wholesale cost, and they must post a notice saying so. The kits have to detect at least one common drink-spiking drug, such as GHB, ketamine or flunitrazepam. California’s Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control has extended the requirement indefinitely.
Insider move: at an LA bar, look for the posted notice. If you don’t see it, ask the bartender where the test kits are. Asking is normal now. It’s the law.
New York: not yet
New York doesn’t have a statewide requirement like California’s. A bill, A8613, would require covered venues to offer free test devices on request and post a notice. As of the legislature’s bill page, it’s sitting in committee. Until it moves, New Yorkers are on BYO: test strips in the clutch, and a venue that takes complaints seriously.
The Nightlife Report safe-night checklist
This is advice, not statistics. It’s the playbook our desk actually uses:
- Arrive with a plan to leave. Know your ride before your first drink.
- Hold your own cup. Lids help. California’s rules for these bars cover drink-lid availability too.
- Pick rooms with staff who look up. A good door and a good bartender are the best safety features in the city.
- Share your location with one friend who’s awake.
- Trust the “ick.” The r/AskWomen red-flag threads this month are basically a field manual. If a guy won’t take a polite no, that is the whole answer.
Where to go: the 21+ shortlist
These are rooms vetted by people who eat and drink for a living. We’re not rating security here. We’re pointing you to rooms with the right energy.
Los Angeles
- Thickman’s Tavern, Fairfax. The Infatuation’s newest Hit List addition: a loud, rec-room sports bar for walk-ins, with cornichon martinis, where much of the crowd isn’t even watching the game. Walk-in friendly, so you can bail on a plan without a reservation drama.
- Bite 007 at Teddy’s, Hollywood Roosevelt. LAmag listed this as a female-directed night of queer DJs from LA’s underground scene. Watch for the next date.
- Maree, Pico-Robertson. A candlelit bistro with wine from $12 a pour and service the Infatuation says punches above its price. It’s a first-date spot where you can hear yourself say no.
- Alta Adams, West Adams. Freshly reopened, and the Infatuation’s pick for meeting a date “in the middle.”
New York
- Time Out Market, Manhattan and Brooklyn. A busy, public, social room. It hosted free Salsa Thursdays anniversary parties this month, with a beginner lesson in Manhattan. Ideal for a group night or a solo night.
- Titán, Dumbo. Time Out’s top new restaurant this month, with a glowing mezcal bar and a leafy backyard.
- El Camarón Peludo, West Village. A seafood wine bar from the Taqueria Ramirez team, added to Eater NY’s October Heatmap.
- Café Charmant, West Village. A French brasserie from the Corner Store team, also new to the Heatmap. Book it for the parents, then the date.
Halloween: the big safety test
Both cities throw their biggest street parties on Saturday, Oct. 31. New York’s Village Halloween Parade starts at 7 p.m. from Sixth Avenue and Canal Street, per Time Out. West Hollywood’s Halloween Carnaval takes over Santa Monica Boulevard the same night. Big crowds, masks and a lot of drinks: make a meetup point, charge your phone and keep the buddy system on.
The bottom line
The best night out is the one you remember, for the right reasons. LA has a law on its side. New York has a bill in committee and a lot of great rooms. Pick your spot, plan your exit, hold your drink and have the best night of your month.
