What Women Actually Want From a Night Out, According to Reddit’s Most Brutally Honest Threads

Safe by design, social by default, solo-friendly and priced like a human made the menu: what Reddit’s women want from a night out in NYC and LA.

Forget the focus group. If you want to know what women in New York and Los Angeles want from a night out, read what they post at 1 a.m. when nobody’s watching. We went through this month’s top threads on r/AskWomen, r/AskNYC, r/LosAngeles and r/TwoXChromosomes. The wish list is shorter, smarter and a lot less bottle-service than the club promoters think.

1. To feel safe without having to think about it

Let’s start where the threads start. A post titled “Ladies beware” was a top r/LosAngeles post this month. Commenters placed it at The Grove and described a man who flipped to aggression toward a woman who was just trying to go about her day. They said his talk came straight out of the “manosphere.” On r/TwoXChromosomes, one widely shared post described men who deliberately don’t move out of a woman’s path. In New York, “Assaulted in midtown on my way back home” was among r/AskNYC’s top posts.

The takeaway isn’t “stay home.” Women want venues, door staff and routes that make safety the default, not a side quest. (We broke down the actual laws in our safest 21+ spots guide.)

2. A place to meet people that isn’t an app

One of the most relatable posts on r/AskNYC this month: “Broke in NYC, where can I hang out for free and maybe meet people in Fall/Winter?” The poster wanted somewhere “it’s normal to go alone.” Commenters came through with:

  • the free Chelsea galleries clustered around 25th Street and Tenth Avenue
  • pay-what-you-wish museums
  • a library card plus Culture Pass
  • silent-reading meetups where most people come alone
  • Queens Night Market (check this season’s dates)

Meanwhile, r/AskWomen asked introverted women who “rarely go out and never made the first move” how they eventually met someone. Another thread asked which hobbies women wish more men were into. Read between the lines: the dream night out comes with a built-in activity. Salsa lesson, gallery crawl, trivia. Something to do with your hands besides scroll.

Insider note: Time Out Market NY’s free Salsa Thursdays anniversary parties included a free beginner lesson. That’s exactly the brief.

3. Men who aren’t a red flag, and the language to spot one

r/AskWomen’s front page this month reads like a field guide:

  • “What’s a behavior that more women should know is a red flag?”
  • “What are the red flags you notice in women as a ‘woman’?”
  • “What dating lesson did you learn the hard way?”
  • “What’s a dealbreaker you ignored and later regretted?”

There was also some necessary skepticism toward the feed: “What do you think is normalized on social media, but truly not realistic or sensible in an actual, healthy relationship?” And one thread went looking for the tender stuff: women who want a partner who “yearns,” and what that actually looks like.

The ask is clear. Less performance, more sincerity. If your venue’s whole personality is a bottle parade, this crowd has already left for the wine bar.

4. Permission to go out alone

“Looking for bar in Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn where I can drink alone and sad” is a real r/AskNYC top post this month, and we respect the honesty. Solo outings are a whole category now: the bar seat, the gallery, the reading meetup. The best spots treat a party of one like a regular, not a problem.

5. A budget that survives the night

r/AskWomen asked: “What’s a tiny luxury you refuse to give up, no matter how tight money gets?” Commenters named skincare, Spotify Premium, the gym and one heroically specific Starbucks order. Across the aisle on r/povertyfinance, a $33 large pepperoni set off a pricing riot. The modern night out is high-low: one great cocktail, a free event and a cheap taco on the walk home.

LA tip: The Infatuation’s LA Hit List flags Tacos Royale in Silver Lake as perfect for late nights. Maree on Pico pours wine from $12.

6. To actually be seen (as in styled, not stared at)

Style questions are everywhere. r/AskNYC had a thread on NYC fashion trends and another on dressing for eight months of being “simultaneously cold and sweating.” r/MakeupAddiction’s top posts included a “makeup look i did recently for a night out.” The night out is still the runway. The audience just wants to choose who’s watching.

The bottom line

Reddit’s women aren’t asking for a bigger club. They want a smarter night: safe by design, social by default, solo-friendly and priced like a human made the menu. Venues that get it will own the season. Venues that don’t will get a thread written about them.
