Hollywood Money Bets on Hope: Kevin Hines Takes the AFA Stage

2 min read

Hollywood spends a fortune selling despair. On Sunday, Nov. 8, a room full of financiers at the Beverly Hilton will stand up for a man who sells hope.

Kevin Hines will receive the Impact Award at the American Film Association’s first-ever gala, according to an AFA press release dated Oct. 29. Zak Williams will present it.

That pairing is the story. Hines has spoken worldwide on mental health and suicide prevention, after surviving a suicide attempt at the Golden Gate Bridge in 2000. He wrote the memoir Cracked, Not Broken. He directed Death Bridge, a documentary about bringing suicide prevention measures to the bridge. Williams is one of its executive producers, alongside Logan Paul, Tay and Taylor Lautner, and Dan Martell, the release said.

The provocative part: this is a business gala

The AFA does not pitch itself as a charity. It pitches itself as the business of film: packaging, financing, production and distribution. The gala, the release said, “brings producers, financiers and investors together around a shared commitment to a more sustainable film industry.”

So the money people are honoring a mental-health film. That is either a sign the industry has found its conscience, or a sign that hope finally pencils out. Either way, it is worth watching.

“Kevin’s work reminds us why that matters: films can bring attention to urgent issues and give people a reason to hope,” said Austin Spicer, president of the American Film Association.

“A stronger business foundation gives creatives the support to stay creative,” said Hailey Spicer, the association’s chief operating officer.

The room

The black-tie evening includes a reception, dinner and awards across the film business. The AFA Screenplay Award winner, chosen from the competition’s monthly selections, will accept on stage. Austin Spicer, Hailey Spicer and Chief Financial Officer Shane Seo, the founders of Dreamland Studios, will host.

The association is based in Atlanta, with chapters in Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando and Dallas, and says it reaches an average of 10,000 filmmakers a month. The gala follows the AFA Film Conference at the same venue; admission is separate. The gala is invitation-only; requests go through americanfilmassociation.com/gala.

Nightlife Report will be on the carpet. Who wins the screenplay award, and what Hines says when he takes the stage, we will report as it happens.
