The short version

Rachel Scott of Diotima was named American Womenswear Designer of the Year at the CFDA Fashion Awards on Monday night, two years after she first took the prize. Ralph Lauren won menswear, Ana Khouri won accessories and Colleen Allen was named the emerging designer of the year. The ceremony was held at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, with Keke Palmer hosting.

What happened

  • Womenswear. Lupita Nyong’o and Francisco Costa presented the award to Scott, according to the CFDA’s official announcement. WWD reports she beat Catherine Holstein for Khaite, Michael Kors, Tory Burch and Wes Gordon for Carolina Herrera. The Jamaican-born designer, who also serves as creative director of Proenza Schouler, first won the women’s prize in 2024.
  • Menswear. Matt Damon and Tremaine Emory presented the honor to Ralph Lauren, per the CFDA. WWD notes Lauren previously won menswear in 1996 and 2007, and won womenswear last year.
  • Accessories. Naomi Osaka and Joseph Altuzarra presented the award to Ana Khouri, a Brazilian-born sculptor and high-jewelry designer based in New York, over a field that included The Row, Luar, Sophie Buhai and Coach, WWD reports.
  • Emerging. Cole Escola and Gabriela Hearst presented the emerging designer award to Colleen Allen, a Brooklyn-based womenswear designer who was also a 2026 LVMH Prize nominee, according to WWD.
  • The honorees. Hailey Bieber, ROSÉ and Zoë Kravitz presented International Designer of the Year to Anthony Vaccarello, who WWD notes has confirmed he is leaving Saint Laurent after a ten-year run. Anna Wintour gave Tory Burch the Positive Change Award. Gap Inc. received the Innovation Award, accepted by Richard Dickson and Zac Posen. Eva Chen won the Media Award, Linda Fargo of Bergdorf Goodman the Founder’s Award, Susan Cianciolo the Isabel Toledo tribute, Inez and Vinoodh the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award and architect Peter Marino the Fashion Icon Award.
  • One more thing. The CFDA also announced a new scholarship with WYouth, presented by Nuuly, that launches in 2027 and funds two students.

Vogue and BoF also published full winner coverage overnight.

Why people care

The CFDA Awards are American fashion’s closest thing to the Oscars, and the results tell you who the industry is betting on. A second womenswear win for Scott, who is also running Proenza Schouler, puts a designer known for hand-crafted Jamaican techniques and sharp tailoring at the center of the conversation. Ralph Lauren’s win is a reminder that the most established name in American fashion can still beat the younger field on the clothes.

The honoree list also reads like a map of where fashion power sits right now: a departing Paris creative director, a mass retailer rewarded for innovation, a social media executive, a department store tastemaker and an architect who designs luxury stores.

What it means for you

  • Shopping. Award wins tend to send people looking for the winning labels. If you have been eyeing Diotima or Ana Khouri, expect more attention on both this season.
  • For LA designers. Gap Inc. winning an innovation prize shows the room is open to big companies that rethink product, not only independent labels. Emerging designers should note the scholarship and the CFDA’s growing investment in students.
  • For LA stylists and photographers. A night with this many presenters creates weeks of red carpet references. Save the looks now for holiday mood boards.

Our take

Opinion. This was a night that rewarded craft and continuity over hype. Scott winning twice in three years is a signal that a clear point of view, done with care, still beats noise. The Ralph Lauren win is less surprising and more instructive: decades of consistency is its own kind of innovation. If you are building a label in LA, the lesson is to stay specific and keep showing up.
