The short version

John Frieda, the British celebrity hairstylist whose name is on bottles of Frizz-Ease around the world, has died aged 75, the BBC reports. His death was announced by his salon in an Instagram post on Tuesday. The Telegraph also published an obituary on Wednesday.

What happened

  • The announcement. “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that our dear John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family,” his salon said, according to the BBC. “John was more than a mentor to us; he was a true icon of the hair industry.”
  • The early years. Frieda was born Alan Howard Frieda in London in 1951. The BBC reports his father owned a salon in Ealing, west London, and his grandfather was a Fleet Street barber. He later became an assistant to Leonard Lewis at House of Leonard, the salon known for Twiggy’s famous crop, and worked for British Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.
  • The famous cut. In 1976 he created the Purdey bowl cut for Joanna Lumley in The New Avengers, one of the most copied haircuts of the decade.
  • The salons. He opened his own salon in central London in 1976, which the BBC says was booked up months in advance. Branches followed in Barbados, Ibiza and Los Angeles.
  • The clients. The BBC lists Twiggy, Jackie Kennedy, Mick Jagger, Diana, Princess of Wales, Madonna, Nicole Kidman and Scarlett Johansson among the people he worked with.
  • The products. He created Frizz-Ease serum in 1988 and, in the 1990s, stepped back from cutting hair to build his product line. In 2002 he and business partner Gail Federici sold the company to Kao for 450 million dollars, the BBC reports.

Why people care

Frieda was one of the first stylists to turn salon credibility into a mass-market product that anyone could buy at the drugstore. Frizz-Ease solved a problem many people had, and it made his name familiar to shoppers who would never sit in his chair.

In his words

Speaking to the British Beauty Council in June, Frieda offered advice to the next generation of hairdressers, according to the BBC: “If you have a client in front of you, rather than thinking about the money or what you’re getting from cutting their hair, just think about the action. The reward is giving her the best haircut she’s ever had. That is your reward.”

What it means for you

  • For LA stylists. Frieda’s path is the model many stylists with a following are chasing now: build a reputation in the chair, then turn it into a product. His advice is a reminder that the reputation comes first.
  • For shoppers. The John Frieda brand is owned by Kao and continues. Nothing in the reporting suggests changes to the product line.
  • For anyone who loves a classic cut. The Purdey is 50 years old this year and still shows up on mood boards. Ask your stylist about a modern take if you’ve been thinking about a bowl cut or a short, glossy shape.

Our take

Opinion. Frieda’s story is about craft scaling up without losing the point. He made his name on haircuts people still remember, and then put that know-how into a bottle that helped millions of people with frizz. LA’s salon world, from West Hollywood to Beverly Hills, owes a lot to the idea he proved: a great stylist can be a great brand.
