Who’s Who in New York
Keke Palmer hosts, the museum dresses up, and five young designers wait to hear their names.
Darlings, tonight the American fashion establishment puts on its best and walks past the dinosaurs. The 2026 CFDA Fashion Awards, presented by Amazon Fashion and hosted by Keke Palmer, take place this evening, Monday, Nov. 2, at the American Museum of Natural History, the ceremony’s home for a fourth year. We covered the honorees and the presenters last week. Tonight’s installment of Who’s Who in New York is about the nominees, and above all the five names in the emerging category, because the CFDA’s newcomer award is where tomorrow’s establishment is usually spotted first.
The emerging class
The five for American Emerging Designer of the Year. The CFDA lists Colleen Allen, Emily Dawn Long, Julia Ferentinos of Juju Vera, Julian Louie of Aubero and Zane Li of Lii. Vogue notes that three of them, Long, Ferentinos and Li, are also finalists for this year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, and that Li won the 2026 Karl Lagerfeld Prize at the LVMH Prize. That is a résumé line that tends to travel.

Why the category matters. The winner is chosen by the CFDA Fashion Awards Guild, which voted from Oct. 7 to 21, per the CFDA. For a young label, the award is less a trophy than an introduction: to buyers, to editors and to the investors who read the list as closely as the rest of us read the menu.
The Eileen Otte Ford verdict: the founder of Ford Models, born Eileen Otte in Manhattan in 1922, said of promising young models, “There’s a cockiness to them. … They’re just going to be good and you can just tell it,” as she told Life in 1970. Her daughter Katie told the Associated Press that her mother’s “greatest thrill was to spot a model in the daily course of life.” The emerging category is that thrill, institutionalized.

The established names
Womenswear. The nominees for American Womenswear Designer of the Year are Catherine Holstein of Khaite, Michael Kors, Rachel Scott of Diotima, Tory Burch and Wes Gordon of Carolina Herrera. Vogue points out that Holstein is a two-time winner, Scott won in 2024, and Gordon earns a second consecutive nomination in the year Carolina Herrera marks its 45th anniversary.
Menswear. For American Menswear Designer of the Year: Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School New York, Ralph Lauren, Thom Browne, Todd Snyder and Willy Chavarria. Chow and Osborne relaunched Public School this year, Vogue notes, and first won the award in 2014. A comeback nominated in its first season back is a very New York plot.
Accessories. For American Accessory Designer of the Year: Ana Khouri, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of The Row, Raul Lopez of Luar, Sophie Buhai and Stuart Vevers of Coach. Vogue notes that Luar is back on the New York Fashion Week schedule.
The room tonight
The honorees, briefly. Tory Burch receives the Positive Change Award; Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award; Anthony Vaccarello, International Designer of the Year; Eva Chen, the Media Award; Linda Fargo, the Founder’s Award for three decades shaping Bergdorf Goodman; and Susan Cianciolo, the Isabel Toledo Tribute Award, per the CFDA. Peter Marino’s Fashion Icon award will be presented by Cornelia Guest, Vogue reports. “This year feels especially meaningful as we celebrate the extraordinary breadth of American creativity,” CFDA chief executive Steven Kolb said when the nominees were announced.
How to follow along. Winners are typically announced from the stage and posted by the CFDA and the trade press the same night. We will be watching the emerging category first.
The superintelligence read
Model the list as a network and a pattern appears: the same names recur across the CFDA nominations, the Fashion Fund finals and the LVMH Prize, which means the industry’s scouts are reading one another’s notes. That is efficient, and it is also how talent outside the loop gets missed. Eileen Otte Ford found faces on the street, not on shortlists. The lesson for New York creatives is old and still true: be seen in the daily course of life, and keep making the work.
