The 30-Minute Sunday Reset That Makes Monday Easier

A Sunday reset is a short, repeatable session where you set up the week so it takes less willpower. This is our method, built on a simple idea from Understood’s routines episode and ADHD Women Flourishing’s start-with-one-change approach: keep it small, keep it attached to something you already do, and leave room for rest. The thirty-minute structure is our own suggestion, not a research finding.

The rule

Set a timer for 30 minutes. When it rings, you are done, even if you are not finished. A reset you can finish beats a perfect one you abandon.

Block 1: Brain dump (5 minutes)

Open your notes app or a paper page. Write everything on your mind: errands, texts you owe, worries, dates. Do not sort. The goal is to get it out of your head.

Block 2: Calendar glance (5 minutes)

Look at the next seven days. Mark fixed things: work meetings, appointments, social plans. Then protect two things: one block of rest and one block of something you enjoy. If your week has no joy on it, add one thing.

Block 3: Pick three priorities (5 minutes)

From your brain dump, choose three things for the week. One work, one home, one self. If you do those three, the week was a win. Everything else is a bonus.

Block 4: Prep one thing (10 minutes)

Prepare one thing that will make Monday easier: lay out clothes, wash a water bottle, charge devices, pack the bag, plan two dinners, or restock a snack. Choose one. Not five.

Block 5: Close with a treat (5 minutes)

Make a tea, light a candle, step outside, or text a friend. A reset that ends with a small pleasure is easier to repeat.

Make it stick

  • Same time each week. Sunday at 5 PM works for many people. Pick yours.
  • Same place. A kitchen table or a favorite chair.
  • Attach it to something. After your Sunday coffee, or before your walk.
  • Keep the notes. A running list in your notes app tells you what you actually do each week.

If you miss a Sunday

Do a ten-minute version on Monday morning: three priorities and one prep task. You do not need to catch up on guilt.

For ADHD brains

Understood’s host suggests tiny habits, attaching new routines to things you already do, and leaving room for rest and fun. A thirty-minute reset follows that spirit: it is small, scheduled, and ends with something kind.

Weekly checklist

  • [ ] Calendar glance
  • [ ] Three priorities
  • [ ] One prep task
  • [ ] One small treat

Not medical advice. If planning feels impossible most days, or you suspect ADHD or burnout, talk to a licensed professional.

A sample reset (so you can see it)

Brain dump: gym bag, call dentist, reply to Sam, gift for Mom, rent due Friday, feeling behind. Calendar: two meetings, dinner Thursday, rest Saturday morning. Three priorities: finish the report (work), book the dentist (home), a long walk (self). Prep: pack the gym bag. Treat: tea on the balcony. Total: thirty minutes, and Monday starts with a plan.

Adjust it to your life

Short on time? Run blocks 1 and 3 only, for ten minutes. Have kids? Add a “family” priority and let them pick one weekend activity. Work odd hours? Move the reset to your last day off. A reset is a shape, not a schedule.
