Part of today’s What You Missed: Thursday, Nov 5.

The short version
“Richard Avedon: Hollywood” opened Nov. 4 at Gagosian Beverly Hills with more than 120 photographs spanning 1947 to 2004. Curated by the Richard Avedon Foundation, the show runs through Dec. 19 at 456 N. Camden Drive. Hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and admission is free. The Los Angeles Times and the gallery both frame the exhibition as Hollywood as an American idea, not just a zip code.
What happened
- The show. Gagosian presents more than 120 portraits, mixing iconic images with rarely seen work. Subjects range from Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Charlie Chaplin to Steven Spielberg, Audrey Hepburn and a 1993 Academy Awards group with Clint Eastwood, Al Pacino and Sharon Stone.
- The curator. Laura Avedon of the Richard Avedon Foundation conceived the show while Imagine Entertainment researched the archive for Ron Howard’s documentary “Avedon,” which premiered at Cannes and streams on Netflix beginning Nov. 11, the Los Angeles Times reports.
- The thesis. Laura Avedon told the Times she is looking at Hollywood as “a particularly American idea that encompasses so much of America, fame, money, creativity, talent and vision,” not only film people.
- The sections. Early rooms gather 1950s and ’60s muses and performers. Later rooms move to directors, writers and political figures who shaped Hollywood’s power, including Ronald Reagan and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
- The LA thread. Larry Gagosian’s relationship with Avedon dates to the mid-1970s; the gallery has staged more than a dozen Avedon shows in the last 15 years.
- Practical facts. Address: 456 N. Camden Drive, Beverly Hills. Hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 10–5:30. Cost: free. Info: gagosian.com.
Why people care
Avedon defined how fashion and fame look on a white background. Putting more than 120 of those images in Beverly Hills, timed with a new documentary, turns a gallery visit into both a lunch-hour museum hit and a primer on how celebrity photography still shapes red carpets and campaigns. Free admission removes the usual barrier.
What it means for you
- Go on a weekday afternoon. Camden Drive is walkable from Rodeo. Tuesday through Saturday, 10 to 5:30, means you can fit it between a coffee and a dinner reservation without buying a ticket.
- Pair it with the film. Howard’s “Avedon” hits Netflix on Nov. 11. See the walls first, then the documentary, or reverse the order if you want context before the prints.
- For photographers. Study the white-ground portraits and the 1993 Academy Awards group. Avedon’s distance and stillness still teach more than most lighting tutorials.
- For fashion students. The Dovima-and-elephants legacy and the Monroe Norell dress sit in the same career as political and civil-rights work. The show argues those threads belong together.
- No excuse on price. Free means the only cost is parking or a rideshare. Do not wait for the last weekend of December.
Our take
Opinion. Gagosian could have sold this as a nostalgia trip. Framing Hollywood as an American system of influence is sharper, and it fits Beverly Hills without feeling like a tourist trap. If you only see one photography show before the holidays, make it this one: free, dense and local. Then argue about which portrait you would hang in a WeHo apartment.
