Los Angeles has a reputation for expensive afternoons. It also has some of the best free culture in the country. Here is a route that costs little more than parking and lunch. Hours and prices come from each venue’s own website, checked Nov 4, 2026. Ratings are public review figures we read the same day (see the note at the end). Always verify before you go.
1. The Broad (downtown)
What: contemporary art museum. Cost: free general admission, with a timed ticket recommended. Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 11 to 5; Thursday 11 to 8; Saturday and Sunday 10 to 6; closed Monday. Parking: garage parking is $19 for three hours with validation. Public reviews: 4.7 across 18,403 ratings.
Tip: book the timed ticket online first and arrive at opening to see the galleries before the crowd.
2. Grand Central Market (downtown)
What: the historic food hall at 317 S Broadway. Hours: open daily, 8 AM to 9 PM; vendors vary. Public reviews: 4.5 across 37,074 ratings. Official site.
Tip: walk the full loop before you buy. Choose one savory and one sweet, then eat on the upper-level seating if the main tables are packed.

3. Hammer Museum (Westwood)
What: UCLA’s art museum at 10899 Wilshire Blvd. Cost: free admission, no reservation needed. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday, 11 AM to 6 PM. Public reviews: 4.5 across 2,185 ratings.
Tip: the courtyard is a good place to sit with a coffee and a book between galleries.
4. Griffith Observatory (sunset)
What: the landmark at 2800 E Observatory Rd. Cost: free admission. Hours: Tuesday through Friday, 12 to 10 PM; Saturday and Sunday, 10 AM to 10 PM; closed Monday. Parking: paid parking near the Observatory, with free parking downhill. Phone: (213) 473-0800. Public reviews: 4.7 across 20,648 ratings.
Tip: if you take the free parking downhill, wear walking shoes and bring a layer. It gets windy after dark.
A route that works

| 1:00 PM | Grand Central Market lunch |
| 3:00 PM | Drive west to the Hammer (Tue to Sun) |

Make it a ritual
Pick the same day every month and call it your culture day. Bring a friend, or go alone. If you want company, see our LA clubs for women.
How we read these ratings
The numbers above are rounded public review ratings and counts as read on Nov 4, 2026. They move daily and reflect visitors’ opinions, not ours. Use them as a starting point.
Costs to expect
The admissions above are free, but a day out still has costs: parking, lunch, and rideshares. Budget for parking near The Broad (the garage is $19 for three hours with validation), a market lunch, and gas or fare to the westside. If you take transit or share a ride with a friend, the day gets cheaper still.
Pack list
- A light layer for the Observatory after sunset
- Comfortable shoes for the Broad and the Hammer
- A water bottle and a phone charger
- Cash or a card for the market
If it rains
LA is mostly indoors-friendly. Swap the Observatory for a second museum visit and stay inside for lunch at the market. The route works in reverse, too.
