New York stopped whispering this fall. Walk any avenue in October and the outerwear does the talking.
New York stopped whispering this fall. Walk any avenue in October and the outerwear does the talking: denim trenches, funnel necks, fringe and animal print.
1. Statement coats
Writer Late Bloomer reports “maximalist chic” outerwear all over the city: funnel-neck jackets with cocoon collars, animal-print coats, and denim trenches with a 70s feel. The military jackets forecasters predicted were not spotted at all.
2. The sweater vest is back
Cropped, oversized vests in chunky knits and crochet, layered over long-sleeve shirts and dresses.
3. Camo, of all things
Camo barrel-leg pants and culottes, worn to stand out rather than blend in.

4. Top-handle bags and red shoes
Retro top-handle bags and red shoes round out the look.
5. After dark, sheer goes embellished
Who What Wear’s Kaye Bassey (Oct 9) saw beaded skirts and sequined sheer pieces “that could take you from a glamorous café straight to an evening event,” plus high-low tops, monochrome miniskirts, reworked silk slips with lace, and the return of the pencil skirt.
Uptown edit
On the Upper East Side, Who What Wear spotted sheer skirts under long tailored coats and suede jackets, from bombers to cape styles.
