First principles: who owns them
- LVMH: The Arnault family group crossed 50% of LVMH’s share capital in February 2026, holding 50.01% of the capital and 65.94% of the voting rights. By the first-half 2026 report it was 50.21% and 66.39% (AMF filing; Bloomberg). In September 2026 the family moved to simplify the structure through Christian Dior (Reuters).
- Kering: Artémis, the Pinault family holding, is the controlling shareholder. François-Henri Pinault chairs the board, and former Renault chief Luca de Meo is CEO (Kering AGM 2026).
Stated strategy
- Kering: “ReconKering.” Cut debt, inventory and stores, turn Gucci around, and scale jewelry and eyewear, with a pledge to more than double the profit margin (Reuters).
- Artémis: In 2026 it sold its Giambattista Valli stake back to the founder as part of a disposal drive (Reuters).
Team Jupiter or Team Saturn?
- LVMH: Jupiter in acquisitions, Saturn in control. It keeps expanding the empire while tightening family voting control.
- Kering 2026: declared Saturn. By its own words this is a maintenance phase: “after a period focused on the international expansion… a more integrated model.”
Unpopular opinion: Shrinking Gucci’s store count may be the most creative thing Kering has done in a decade.
