Three ways to throw a birthday, reviewed like the games we grew up on: a karaoke room, a bowling alley and a big-room New York club. Each is scored section by section. Pick the one that fits your crowd, not the one that costs the most.
Scores: Break Room 86 8.5 · Highland Park Bowl 8.5 · Marquee New York 8.0

Break Room 86 Review
Inside The LINE hotel, 630 S Ardmore Ave, Koreatown, Los Angeles

An 80s rec room with a live band behind the karaoke mic and private rooms hidden in the back. Koreatown’s best argument that a great night doesn’t need a table.
Door & Entry
Expect a line. One Reddit regular says there is “a dress code (mostly enforced for men) and a long line” (r/AskLosAngeles). The karaoke rooms book ahead, so reserve if you want one.
Atmosphere & Design
A full 80s set piece run by Houston Hospitality, the group behind Good Times at Davey Wayne’s and No Vacancy (official site). The hidden rooms are the twist.
Sound & Music
Live-band karaoke is the signature. A Reddit user says Tuesday’s live-band karaoke has no cover (r/LosAngeles).
Crowd
Described as “really fun and unique” by a regular. You come to sing and to cheer for strangers.
Value
A free-cover live-band night is rare in LA. Private rooms cost more, so ask what the minimum is when you book.
Verdict · 8.5 / 10
The most fun door in Koreatown. Arrive early, dress sharp, sing loud.
The Good
- Live-band karaoke
- Hidden private rooms for birthdays
- No cover on Tuesday live-band nights (per Reddit)
The Bad
- Long line
- Dress code enforced harder on men
- Private rooms need booking ahead
Who it’s for: Birthday groups, singers and anyone who wants a fun night over a stiff one.

Highland Park Bowl Review
5621 N. Figueroa St., Highland Park, Los Angeles (1933 Group)

Established in 1927 and restored by the 1933 Group, this is a working bowling alley, bar and music room in one. LA history you can actually bowl in.
Door & Entry
All ages before 8PM and 21+ after 8PM (official site). Lanes and events book through the site.
Atmosphere & Design
The 1933 Group peeled back decades of drop ceilings to expose the original 1920s façade and interior, refurbished the lanes and put the finds on display.
Sound & Music
The building has a music history that dates to a 1933 live music permit, and it spent decades as a local music venue.
Value
A group activity, a bar and a room full of history in one stop.
Verdict · 8.5 / 10
The best-looking bowling alley in Los Angeles, and a birthday that plans itself.
The Good
- Restored 1920s interior
- Bowling gives groups something to do
- Early all-ages hours
The Bad
- 21+ after 8PM
- Not a dance club
Who it’s for: Birthday groups, first dates and anyone done with velvet ropes.

Marquee New York Review
289 10th Avenue, Chelsea, New York (Tao Group Hospitality)

Tao Group’s Chelsea flagship bills itself as “the most iconic dance floor in the city.” It is the big-room, big-DJ, big-table night in its purest form.
Door & Entry
Open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 11PM to 4AM, with tickets sold for event nights (official site). A former bottle host’s advice for NYC doors: arrive half an hour before peak and “be nice to the door staff because we remember every face” (Reddit).
Atmosphere & Design
A concert-scale room built around the dance floor and DJ booth, with a mezzanine ring of tables.
Sound & Music
Touring headline DJs are the draw; check the event calendar before you go.
Service & Bottles
Named table tiers (Boombox, Beltwall, Front Row Mezzanine) with published minimums in the low-to-mid four figures (Best Parties). Tax and gratuity sit on top.
Value
A ticket gets you the room; a table is a serious spend. Get the minimum and fees in writing.
Verdict · 8.0 / 10
The definitive New York big-room night. Bring a plan and a budget.
The Good
- Headline DJs
- Iconic dance floor
- Clear table tiers
The Bad
- Expensive tables plus fees
- Only three nights a week
- Hard door at peak
Who it’s for: Dance-music fans and birthday groups ready to book a table.
Who runs the room
Marquee belongs to Tao Group; Break Room 86 to Houston Hospitality; Highland Park Bowl to the 1933 Group. Read How LA Nightlife Really Works for the groups behind the night and our Hideaway-to-Warwick route.
Before you book
Ask every venue three things in writing: the minimum for your size of group, what tax, gratuity and fees add up to, and what comes free for the birthday guest. A table is a minimum spend, not a fixed price. Bootsy Bellows’ published menu once added a 15 percent mandatory entertainment fee (h.wood PDF). And you don’t need a promoter: a former bottle host wrote that walk-ins are “totally ok” (Reddit). Plan the ride home before the first round.
