How LA Nightlife Really Works: h.wood, SBE and Tao, Reviewed

Los Angeles nightlife looks like hundreds of independent rooms. It isn’t. A handful of hospitality groups own the dinner, the club and the after-party, and the best nights move between their rooms. Here is who runs what, and the Wednesday route we would build our night around.

Scores: The Hideaway 7.5 · Warwick 7.5 · Delilah 8.0 · Keys 7.5

The groups

The h.wood Group. The West Hollywood power. Its own site lists Delilah, Keys, Poppy, The Nice Guy, Harriet’s West Hollywood and HIPP among its venues (h.wood Group). Dinner and dancing often happen under one roof here.

Tao Group Hospitality. The New York and Las Vegas giant behind Marquee, TAO, LAVO, Avenue and Beauty & Essex (Leaders). In Los Angeles it runs TAO on Selma Avenue in Hollywood and The Fleur Room, a reservations-only lounge on Sunset (Tao Group).

SBE. The restaurant side of the night. Its Katsuya sushi rooms run in Brentwood, Century City and L.A. Live, and the Hollywood Boulevard flagship is listed as reopening soon after renovations (SBE).

RelatedHalloween in the Six Fashion Capitals

The independents with the same people behind them. Our favourite link: Sylvain Bitton of Warwick is a co-owner of The Hideaway on Rodeo Drive (Eater LA, Hollywood Reporter). Dinner at one and a table at the other is not a coincidence. It is one network.

The route: Wednesday, Beverly Hills to Hollywood

Eat at The Hideaway around eight. Its bar runs until two from Wednesday to Saturday, and Wednesday is its Girl Dinner night (The Hideaway). Arrive at Warwick on Sunset for half past ten, when doors open. This is the route our own @thevoden episodes keep coming back to: Warwick Wednesdays and Warwick Wednesday in Hollywood.

Nightlife Report Review

The Hideaway Review

421 N. Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills (Garden Level, Rodeo Collection)

A subterranean Mexican steakhouse with a 100-seat tiled patio, a fireplace, and buttons on the tables that say “Push for Tequila.”

8.0

Food & Pre-game

Baja-inspired surf and turf: grilled branzino, a tomahawk with chimichurri, cocktails by Julian Cox (Eater LA). The tequila button is the pre-game.

8.5

Door

It is a restaurant. Book on OpenTable and you are in.

8.0

Crowd & Scene

Built by an events producer with Hollywood investors, and it shows: a dressed-up, social dinner crowd, busiest on its Wednesday party night.

7.0

Music

A soundtrack to dinner, not a dance floor. It gets louder as the night goes on.

6.5

Service

The most common complaint in public reviews: slow or disjointed service and long waits on busy nights.

6.5

Value

OpenTable puts dinner in the thirty-one to fifty per person band before drinks. Reviewers flag pricey sides, drinks and add-ons.

7.5

Verdict · 7.5 / 10

The right first stop for a Wednesday. Book ahead and pace the tequila button.

The Good

  • Patio and fireplace
  • Tableside tequila service
  • Same ownership circle as Warwick

The Bad

  • Slow service on peak nights
  • Sides and drinks add up
  • Small portions, say some reviewers

Who it’s for: Groups who want dinner to feel like the start of the party.

Nightlife Report Review

Warwick Review

6507 Sunset Blvd, Hollywood

A dark, bi-level Hollywood lounge of leather banquettes and chandeliers. It is less a dance floor than a room full of tables.

6.0

Food & Pre-game

No dinner. Eat first, which is why the route starts at The Hideaway.

4.5

Door

The hardest door in this guide. Open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, half past ten to two (official site). Guest list closes around half past eleven and “does not guarantee entry” (Discotech). One Reddit user calls it the place that will “never let you in without the right approach” (r/AskLosAngeles). Arrive early, dressed up; another regular says it is “tricky to get into unless you come early or look great” (r/LosAngeles).

8.5

Crowd & Scene

An industry, fashion and Hollywood crowd, at its most social on Wednesdays. Dress code is fashionable club wear: no shorts, flip-flops, jerseys or athletic wear.

7.0

Music

Hip-hop and open format. Some reviewers call it top-forty predictable.

7.0

Service

Table guests get a dedicated team. Public reviews describe an overwhelmed door on peak nights and a no-phones attitude at some tables.

6.5

Value

Tables are listed from around fifteen hundred (Clubbable); the venue publishes no fixed minimum, and tax and gratuity sit on top. A table is the only guaranteed way in.

7.5

Verdict · 7.5 / 10

The classic Hollywood Wednesday, if you plan the door. Book a table or arrive before eleven.

The Good

  • Best-looking room on Sunset
  • Wednesday is the night
  • Table guests get their own line

The Bad

  • Hard, inconsistent door
  • Little room without a table
  • Long, disorganised lines at peak, say reviewers

Who it’s for: Groups booking a table and anyone with a reason to be on the list.

Where the rest of our reviews fit

h.wood: Delilah 8.0 and Keys 7.5. Tao Group: Marquee New York 8.0 and TAO Downtown 8.0. Independents: Break Room 86 8.5, plus Bigfoot Lodge 8.0 and Highland Park Bowl 8.5 from the 1933 Group.

Before you book

Ask every venue three things in writing: the minimum for your group, what tax and gratuity add, and the latest arrival time.

How we score: scores are the Nightlife Report’s editorial opinion, based on each venue’s published information and the public reviews cited above, not on paid visits. Prices change, so confirm with the venue.
