How Club Promoters Work: Guest Lists, Hosts and Who Gets Paid

How Club Promoters Work: Guest Lists, Hosts and Who Gets Paid

2 min read

A promoter sells one thing: a full room at the right moment. Every big nightlife group in this series grew from that job. Tao’s founders started as promoters. David Grutman started with a marketing company. Dream Hospitality began as a promotion business.

Promoter versus host

  • Promoter: brings people, often on a guest list, often for free or reduced entry.
  • Host: sells and runs tables for the venue.

City by city

  • Las Vegas: guest lists help early; tables rule after midnight.
  • Miami: promoters quote table minimums directly, as LIV and E11EVEN promoters did for Front Office Sports.
  • Los Angeles: smaller rooms; membership programs like h.wood’s Rolodex sit beside promoters.
  • New York: the hardest doors; promoters matter most.
  • Dubai: table guests, couples and mixed groups first.

Use one well

  1. Ask what time the list closes.
  2. Ask the minimum and fees in writing.
  3. Be honest about your group.
  4. Arrive on time.
