The press pit runs on rumour. Here’s the labour data instead.

Darlings, I’ve repeated a few of these myself. So I checked them, and this is about careers and labour rules, nothing else.
| Myth | Verdict | What the record says |
|---|---|---|
| Models are recruited at 11 or 12 | False (adult runway) | Industry guidelines set a minimum age for runway work. Children’s lines are a separate, regulated category. |
| Training starts by 13 | Partly true | In the Model Alliance’s 2012 survey of 85 models, 54.7% started at 13 to 16, 37.3% at 17 to 20, and 6.7% at 21 or older. |
| Runway at 16 | Partly true | 16 was the floor under the CFDA guidelines and the 2017 LVMH/Kering charter. Kering moved to 18+ from Fall/Winter 2020. |
| Retired at 19 | False | Sociologist Ashley Mears found agents expect high-fashion careers to last under five years. Commercial careers can run decades. |
| Everyone is 5’10″ | Partly true | It’s a common agency guideline for runway, not a law, and it varies by market. |
| Size 0 to 4 | Partly true / outdated | The 2017 charter banned FR 32 for women. France requires a medical certificate for working models. |
| 34-24-34 | Partly true | It’s an agency comp-card convention, not a rule. Fits vary by house. |
| The blonde, blue-eyed standard | False | theFashionSpot counted 17% models of colour in Spring 2015 and 48.6% in Fall 2022. |
The law caught up
New York’s Fashion Workers Act has applied to model management companies since June 19, 2025, and their registration since December 21, 2025. The short version: labour protections, not lookbooks, are the new standard.
