How We Score a Runway: The Nightlife Report Rubric

We borrowed the panel maths from bodybuilding and pageants. We left the bodies out.

Darlings, every ranking is an opinion. The honest ones show their maths. Here’s ours.

Rule zero

We score the walk and the presentation: what a model does with a garment on a runway. We never rate faces, bodies or “attractiveness”. Kids’ shows are never scored. Scored tracks are adults (18+) only.

The card (out of 40)

Category Points Share What we watch
Walk 12 30% Line, rhythm, turn and consistency to the end of the runway
Posing 8 20% Hitting the mark, holding for the pit, a clean exit
Confidence / presence 8 20% Command of the space and recovery from a stumble
Presentation as worn 6 15% How the styling, hair and makeup read with the look
Garment line 6 15% How well the walk shows the cut, drape and movement of the garment

Each category is marked 0 to 10 against written anchors (2, 5, 8 and 10), then weighted.

The panel

We borrowed the shape from physique federations, which use 5, 7 or 9 judges and drop the extremes:

  • 3 judges: no drop. A head judge reviews any card more than 8 points away from the other two.
  • 4 judges: the high and low cards are dropped, and the middle two are averaged.
  • 5 judges (our preference): the high and low cards are dropped, and the middle three are averaged.
  • Fewer than 3 cards: the result is “pending”. No score is published.

Ties go to Walk, then Posing, then relative placement. We also publish a rank-sum check, Olympia-style, so you can see whether the order holds up.

Placement points

The places pay 16, 12, 10, 9, 7, 6, 4 and 3, fed into our Runway Points season ladder.

Worked example: five cards of 31.2, 33.0, 29.8, 35.6 and 24.4. Dropping 35.6 and 24.4 leaves 31.2, 33.0 and 29.8, which average 31.3/40.

Guardrails

  • Disclosure: when someone on the desk also works with a house, we say so.
  • No invented quotes.
  • Unknowns are marked “unconfirmed”.
  • No scoring of minors. Ever.
