The hook

“When you think you’ve reached the limit, you actually haven’t.” That line comes from Charlotte Heidmann, Adidas category director for Adizero, quoted by Footwear News this spring. On Sunday, Nov. 1, it played out on the streets of New York. Both winners of the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon crossed the line in the newest super shoes, and one of those shoes is not even on sale yet.

What happened

  • The women’s race. Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui won her second New York title in 2:24:36, outsprinting defending champion Hellen Obiri, per World Athletics. American Jessica McClain took second in 2:24:42, one second ahead of Obiri, making her the first U.S. woman in New York’s top three since Shalane Flanagan in 2018.
  • The men’s race. Sweden’s Andreas Almgren won on his marathon debut in 2:06:01, pulling away from Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa in Central Park to win by 13 seconds, World Athletics reports. Lesotho’s Kamohelo Mofolo was third in a personal best of 2:06:26.
  • Her shoes. Chepkirui won in Adidas, per Footwear News, which reports that eight of 2026’s 14 major marathon winners wore the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3. FN says the shoe weighs 97 grams in a men’s size 9.5 and calls it the lightest race-legal running shoe ever recorded.
  • His shoes. Almgren won in the Nike Apex, the shoe’s first major marathon win, FN reports. It is due in January and stacks two Air Zoom units at the forefoot. Nike claims 40 percent better energy return than the Alphafly 3.
  • The occasion. World Athletics notes the race celebrated the 50th anniversary of its five-borough route.

Why people care

Marathons have become the world’s biggest live product demos. Footwear News points out that the Adidas Pro Evo 3 swept the London, Berlin and Chicago marathons this year, and that all six podium finishers in Berlin wore it. When the same shoe keeps showing up in winning photos, it stops being gear and becomes a status object.

Nike’s side of the story is just as interesting. A debut marathon win in a shoe the public cannot buy until January is the kind of moment brands dream about, because it turns a release date into a countdown.

What it means for you

  • Expect the hype to spill into street style. In our view, race shoes tend to move from the start line to the sidewalk fast, and a winning shoe is the easiest kind to sell.
  • Do not race in shoes you have not trained in. If you are tempted by a super shoe, build up to it on long runs first. Ultra-light, high-stack shoes feel different, and your calves will notice.
  • Watch January. If you want the Nike Apex, ask your local run shop about release plans now. Specialty run shops can often tell you how many pairs they expect.
  • Price check before you buy. Super shoes carry premium prices and wear out faster than daily trainers. Many runners keep one pair for race day and train in something sturdier.

Our take (opinion)

The real winner on Sunday was the idea that a shoe can be news. Chepkirui and Almgren earned their wins with smart, patient racing, and that should stay the headline. But fashion should pay attention to how running brands use these moments: a public test, a photo finish and a product story told in grams and seconds. It is the clearest product marketing in sport right now, and plenty of luxury houses could learn from it.
