JW Anderson has released a new campaign for its first footwear collaboration with UGG, starring model Kaia Gerber and musician Dev Hynes, better known as Blood Orange. Twin photographers Tanya and Zhenya Posternak shot the pair at home (Design Scene).

What is the JW Anderson x UGG collaboration?

Jonathan Anderson took two familiar UGG styles, the Classic Boot and the Tasman slipper, and added penny-loafer details. The result is two unisex styles, the Loafer Boot and the Loafer, in suede and sheepskin (Design Scene). They have rounded toes, visible box stitching and loafer straps. They come in Chestnut, Khaki and Orange, and the collection arrived on October 15 through both brands and select retailers (The Cool Hour).

Who worked on the campaign?

Anderson handled creative direction, Benjamin Bruno styled it and Julia Wagner designed the set (VEIN Magazine). Gerber and Hynes also wear JW Anderson ready-to-wear: argyle knitwear, leather jackets and the label’s twisted jeans (Hypebae). One frame puts Gerber in the chestnut Loafer Boots with baggy blue jeans and a white sleeveless top (The Cool Hour).

Why cast a model and a musician?

Design Scene reads it as Anderson’s long habit of casting people from different creative fields, with Gerber representing modeling and acting and Hynes music and production (Design Scene). The Impression’s review put the shoes’ “small identity crisis at ground level” as a question: “Are we going out or staying in?” (The Impression).

The Nightlife Report take

That question is the useful part. A sheepskin boot with a loafer strap fits the comfort-first after-hours crowd: the dinner that turns into a bar that turns into a long night. Pair it the way the campaign does, with twisted or baggy denim and a leather jacket, and it reads as a choice rather than a slipper.
