Legion: The Bible’s Word for a Cluster

Legion: The Bible’s Word for a Cluster

2 min read

Mark 5:9, the Roman army, and why everyone ends up in someone’s group.

The verse

Mark 5:9: Jesus asks the man possessed in the tombs his name. The answer: “My name is Legion, for we are many.”

Where it happens

The scene is set among tombs in the region of the Gerasenes, east of the Sea of Galilee. The man lives among the dead.

A warning first

In the passage, Legion is a hostile crowd. The story ends with the spirits sent into a herd of about two thousand pigs (Mark 5:13).

The Roman word

Legio was Rome’s largest army unit. Readers under Roman rule would hear an occupying army in that name.

How it was built

A contubernium was eight men sharing a tent. Ten made a century of eighty. Six centuries made a cohort. Ten cohorts made a legion.

About five thousand

An imperial legion held roughly five thousand soldiers, plus cavalry and support. Rome won by organizing small groups into big ones.

The lesson in the unit

No soldier fought alone. Each one knew the seven men in his tent. Loyalty started small and scaled up.

Dunbar’s number

Anthropologist Robin Dunbar proposed that people can keep about 150 stable relationships. That is close to two Roman centuries.

Anthony’s reading

Anthony uses “legion” as a picture of a cluster: many people gathered under one name. A cluster holds attention and resources better than one person.

Whose cluster?

The question is not whether you will belong to a group. You already do. The question is whose name it carries and whether it values you.

Hostile clusters

The Legion in Mark took over a man and made him live among tombs. Some groups do that today. They take your time and give back nothing.

Build yours deliberately

Start with your eight. The people who would share a tent with you. Then grow to a century you can actually know.

Under one name

A legion had a number and an eagle standard. Your cluster needs a name, a place to meet and a reason to show up.

Freed, then sent

After he was freed, the man asked to follow. He was told to go home and tell people (Mark 5:19). Freedom came with a mission.

The takeaway

Be many on purpose. Gather people who value you under a name worth repeating, or be absorbed into someone else’s.

First principles

Groups beat individuals at holding attention and resources. Start with eight. Grow to a hundred and fifty. Name it.
