Photographers and Models Working for Drinks

Photographers and Models Working for Drinks

2 min read

A drink that costs the venue a few dollars is not pay. Here is the math of being paid in drinks.

The offer

“Come shoot the party. Drinks are on us.” Photographers, models and creatives hear it every week in LA.

What it costs them

In Anthony’s account, a drink costs the venue about five dollars to pour. That is what your night is worth to them.

What it earns them

Your photos sell the room. They fill the next night, the next table and the next booking, for far more than one drink.

The gap

The venue pays you in cost. It earns from you at full price. That gap is your missing pay.

You cannot pay rent in drinks

A landlord takes money. So does a camera store. Drinks do not compound. Cash does.

Health cost

Being paid in alcohol means your pay is something that wears down the body you work with. That is a bad trade twice.

The exposure myth

Exposure only pays if it leads to paid work. Track it. If ten exposure gigs led to zero paid jobs, the data has spoken.

What a fair deal looks like

A set fee, a usage agreement for your photos and credit on every post. Get it in writing, even a text.

Usage rights

Your photos are your property unless you sign them away. Under U.S. law, copyright belongs to the creator from the moment the photo is taken.

Credit is not optional

Ask to be tagged by name on every post. A tag is the smallest payment, and many venues skip even that.

Practice the line

“My rate for a night is this. I can include five edited photos and usage for social.” Say it calmly. Then stop talking.

Expect a no

Some venues will say no. That is information. The ones that say yes are your real clients.

Raise the floor together

When every creative works for drinks, no one gets paid. When a cluster sets a floor, the whole scene rises.

Anthony’s rule

If your work makes money, you get paid in money.

The takeaway

Take the drink if you want it. Send the invoice anyway.

Know your number

Decide your night rate before anyone asks. A creative without a number gets paid in whatever is handy.

First principles

Pay in cost, earn at full price: that gap is your missing pay. Get paid in money, in writing.
