Go Door to Door: Parking-Lot Conversations Beat Waiting for a Patron

Go Door to Door: Parking-Lot Conversations Beat Waiting for a Patron

2 min read

The old way still works. Volume of real conversations drives results.

The wait

Many creatives go to free parties hoping a patron will notice them. Most nights, no one does.

The old way

Talk to people. Door to door, parking lots, after the show. Real conversations, one at a time.

Avon

Avon began in 1886 when David McConnell, a door-to-door book seller, started giving perfume to customers. It became one of the largest direct-selling companies on Earth.

Fuller Brush

Alfred Fuller started the Fuller Brush Company in 1906 and sold brushes door to door. The “Fuller Brush Man” became an American icon.

Dale Carnegie

Before How to Win Friends and Influence People (1936), Dale Carnegie sold bacon, soap and lard for Armour and Company across Nebraska.

Mary Kay

Mary Kay Ash founded her company in 1963 with a few thousand dollars and built it on women selling face to face.

Why it works

A face-to-face ask is harder to ignore than a post. People remember the person who showed up.

Volume

Results come from volume. If one in twenty conversations turns into work, you need twenty conversations, not one great party.

Rejection is data

Most doors say no. Each no teaches you the pitch, the timing and the right door.

Where to start

Venues, salons, gyms, boutiques, restaurants. Anyone whose business would look better with your work.

What to say

Your name, what you do, one result you got for someone like them and a simple question: “Can I show you?”

Leave something

A card, a QR code to your portfolio or a link to the Discord. Give them a way to find you again.

Follow up

Most work comes from the second or third contact. Follow up within two days.

Anthony’s rule

Do not wait to be discovered. Go discover your clients.

The takeaway

Knock on twenty doors this week. Count the conversations, not the likes.

Twenty doors a week

A simple target: twenty in-person conversations a week. Write down each one. Results follow the count.

First principles

Volume of conversations drives results. Show up in person. Follow up.
