Pulse of the Culture
The morning after Halloween is never quiet on either coast. Sequins are back, supper clubs are expanding, and the women who treat beauty as work already know what comes next.
New York dresses for December in November
On Wednesday night, Blake Lively stepped out on the Upper East Side for jeweler Brent Neale’s holiday collection launch at Majorelle, in a midnight-blue sequin minidress from Chanel’s fall 1994 collection — scalloped neckline, black satin bows, glossy side-parted waves. Vogue filed the look as a sparkling return to the party circuit, with the holiday season “only just begun.” Archival polish, not costume-shop noise: that is the register.

The same midweek window brought a Los Angeles brand into Manhattan’s nightlife ledger. DiningOut reported that the h.wood Group — the team behind Delilah and The Nice Guy in Los Angeles — opened Lady Delilah in the Meatpacking District on Tuesday, Nov. 3: a 10,000-square-foot subterranean supper club timed to the Delilah brand’s tenth anniversary, with live entertainment every night and a menu from culinary director Michael Teich. Co-founder John Terzian told the outlet New York sits “at the center of culture,” and that Lady Delilah reimagines the supper-club brief for Meatpacking’s fabric. Café Gitane also reopened in Chinatown; The Stand West comedy room opens Friday at Chelsea Market. The city is stacking tables before the tourists arrive.

Los Angeles keeps the calendar full
LAist’s Nov. 4 weekend brief put the mood in plain English: shorter days, so put something on the calendar. Alanis Morissette opens a four-night Butterfly with a Machete residency at YouTube Theater starting Thursday. The thirteenth annual L.A. Zine Fest is free and all-ages on Saturday at Angel City Derby Warehouse, with more than 350 vendors. Free projection work from Luminex lands on Venice Beach on Sunday. The point is not scarcity. The point is selection.
The Eileen Otte Ford test
Eileen Otte Ford built an empire by treating beauty as labor, not luck. In a 1988 interview with The Toronto Star — preserved in the Associated Press obituary carried by The Globe and Mail — she said: “Models are a business, and they have to treat themselves as a business. Which means they have to take care of themselves and give up all the young joys.” That sentence still sorts a party season from a binge. Sequins are fine. Discipline is the product.

Read this week’s openings through that lens. An archival Chanel look is a decision about silhouette and history. A Los Angeles supper-club brand crossing coasts is a decision about rooms, service, and brand memory. A free zine fest and a ticketed residency are decisions about where attention goes when the nights get longer. Eileen Otte Ford’s standard was never vibes alone. It was professionalism you could photograph.
What to do with the pulse
- If you are dressing for holiday launches, study one archival reference — cut, color, hair — instead of shopping the whole feed.
- If you are booking rooms: Lady Delilah is at 353 West 14th Street; confirm hours and entertainment nights before you promise a table.
- If you are in Los Angeles this weekend: put one free event (Zine Fest or Luminex) and one ticketed night on the same calendar so the week has shape.
