Pulse of the Culture

Los Angeles is counting, New York is cutting red tape, and a car with no driver has reached Manhattan Beach.

Darlings, the confetti has been swept and nobody has been crowned. Los Angeles woke on Wednesday, Nov. 4, to a mayoral race too close to call; New York woke to a governor re-elected before most of the city had finished its nightcap, and to five charter questions that passed in a sweep. On X and in the morning group chats, the two coasts asked the same question in different accents: who decides, and how quickly? Our lens belongs, as ever, to Eileen Otte Ford, who co-founded Ford Models in 1946 and told The Toronto Star in 1988, as the Associated Press later recalled, that “models are a business, and they have to treat themselves as a business.” Cities, it turns out, are no different.

Los Angeles: A Photo Finish, Still in the Darkroom

Councilmember Nithya Raman leads Mayor Karen Bass by roughly 51.1 percent to 48.9 percent, about 377,000 votes to 361,000, with some 738,000 ballots counted, according to the county tally reported by LAist early Wednesday. No winner has been declared. Ballots postmarked by Election Day still count if they arrive within seven days, so the darkroom will stay busy for a while.

Deadline framed it as a referendum on an incumbent, and the industry town read it the way it reads opening-weekend numbers: closely, nervously, and with a spreadsheet open in another tab. NBC News put the arithmetic plainly: Bass would need to win roughly 51.9 percent of the votes still to be counted.

The superintelligence read: every newsroom on the coast now has a model that can forecast the remaining ballots in seconds. None of them can count a single one. The lesson is the one Ford taught her bookers: an estimate is a pitch, not a contract. Wait for the signature.

New York: The Governor, the Rainy-Day Fund and the Sidewalk Café

Gov. Kathy Hochul won a second full term over Bruce Blakeman, leading about 60.1 percent to 39.7 percent with 88 percent of the expected vote counted, CBS New York reported. The state Board of Elections cautions that its unofficial results exclude Westchester’s emergency ballots, the ones stuffed into bags when the scanners sulked on Tuesday.

The quieter story is the one that will change how a Friday night feels. All five City Charter questions passed, each with more than 61 percent yes, amNY reported. Question 1 drops mandatory public hearings for sidewalk cafés and merges the sidewalk and roadway dining applications; the city’s own commission estimates approvals could shrink from as long as eight months to about two. Question 5, the rainy-day fund target of 12 percent of the prior year’s tax revenue, drew the most support of the night, with roughly 72 percent. NewYorkNews.app notes that Staten Island was the only borough to vote no on all five.

The practical part: if you run a bar, a bistro or a supper club in the five boroughs, put the outdoor-dining changes on your calendar now; amNY reports they take effect March 1, 2027. A two-month approval means a spring terrace becomes a plan rather than a prayer.

Meanwhile, the Car With No Driver Went to the Beach

Los Angeles had one more thing to talk about while it refreshed the returns. Waymo expanded its driverless service into Torrance, El Segundo and Manhattan Beach on Tuesday, bringing its territory to about 210 square miles and adding Universal Studios and the Beverly Hills Hotel as destinations, Los Angeles magazine reported. Rides to and from LAX are still not available.

The superintelligence read: a robotaxi is a model you can sit inside. Its value to nightlife is simple: a safe ride home that does not depend on whether a friend stayed sober. Its limit is equally simple: it goes only where its map says yes. Plan the evening around the map, not the hope.

What Eileen Otte Ford Would Tell Both Cities

Ford, per the AP, was known for her “steely manner and eye for talent” and “demanded professionalism from her models.” Translated for a city on the morning after: count every ballot, publish the rules, and approve the café in two months instead of eight. Treat the city as a business, in her sense of the word. That means discipline, not coldness.

  • In LA: check the county’s updates rather than a forecast; the count continues for days.
  • In NY: owners with outdoor seating should read the Question 1 summary before spring permits open.
  • Everywhere: when a machine gives you a number, ask what it has not yet counted.
