The hook

Every year, the question is the same: what is Heidi going to be? For the 25th edition of her New York Halloween party, the answer was the most personal costume she has ever worn. Klum arrived as a giant version of her own left hand, rings, nails and all. And the line everyone is repeating is hers: “Hands down, the hardest thing is carrying it.”

What happened

  • The look. Klum came as a supersized replica of her left hand, with red nails, a thumb ring, her engagement ring and wedding band, and a “Tom” tattoo, AP reported via CBS News.
  • The work. She told reporters it took five to six hours to get into the costume, per AP. “It’s quite heavy,” she said.
  • The team. “It took a lot of hands putting this hand together,” Klum told reporters on the red carpet, the BBC reports. “I think about 10 or 20 hands.”
  • The idea. Per the BBC, she explained: “I looked at my hand and I thought ‘Hey, I think that I can fit my body inside of this somehow.’”
  • The venue. The party was held at Cathédrale in New York, AP reports. Her husband, Tom Kaulitz, was away on tour, which explains the tattoo. “A little bit of Tom is with me,” she told AP.
  • The guests. Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka came as the twins from The Shining, Jade Thirlwall arrived as a stone angel statue, and Tramell Tillman wore detailed face makeup and prosthetics, according to the BBC.

Why people care

Klum has turned one party into an annual pop culture event. The BBC lists past looks including a worm, Medusa and Princess Fiona from Shrek, and each reveal becomes a guessing game for weeks. This year she leaned into the anniversary by making the costume about herself, and she said the goal was novelty: “I always try to come up with something unusual and I don’t think I’ve seen an actual person walking around like a hand. I thought that was something new and different.”

The reveal also traveled fast on video. The BBC’s clip and USA Today’s reveal video carried the arrival, and the “hands down” quote did the rest.

Meanwhile in London

Across the Atlantic, Maya Jama hosted her own party dressed as four-time Olympic champion Sir Mo Farah. She told Elle UK, as quoted by the BBC, that Farah “loved the idea” and sent “all of his real life Olympic outfits, his real, actual medals.” Katherine Ryan came dressed as Jama, and Lily Allen arrived as a concert seating map covered in unsold tickets, per the BBC.

What it means for you

  • Concept beats budget. The talked-about looks this year were ideas first: a hand, a seating map, a friend dressed as the host. You can do that without a prosthetics team.
  • Make it personal. Klum’s ring and tattoo details are what made people look twice. One personal detail turns a costume into a story.
  • Plan for comfort. If the queen of Halloween says carrying it is the hard part, believe her. Test your look for weight, heat and how you will sit, drink and get into a car.
  • Save the idea list now. LA’s costume shops and rental houses are calmer in November. Next year’s ambitious look starts with a sketch this month.

Our take (opinion)

Twenty-five years in, Klum still wins Halloween because she treats it like a runway reveal: secret build, big entrance, one quotable line. The hand works because it is simple to describe and impossible to forget. The lesson for anyone hosting in LA is the same one fashion houses know: the moment people can retell in one sentence is the one that spreads.
