The hook

Most Halloween tributes are lookalikes. Zendaya’s was the actual thing. For Halloween 2026, she and longtime stylist Law Roach recreated Halle Berry’s look from the July 2000 New York premiere of X-Men, and Roach tracked down the original Lanvin set from the fall 2000 collection.

What happened

  • The reference. Berry wore a geometric yellow Lanvin two-piece from the fall 2000 collection to the X-Men premiere in New York in July 2000, Harper’s Bazaar reports. Elle describes it as a butter yellow, brown and white print with silver accents and matching low-rise, wide-leg trousers.
  • The pull. Per Bazaar, Roach “managed to get his hands on it,” meaning the same set Berry wore.
  • The styling. Zendaya added sunglasses and diamond earrings like Berry did, plus pointed-toe nude heels and red nails, Bazaar reports. She skipped Berry’s sheer brown shirt and long crystal waist chain.
  • The credits. Roach thanked Lanvin’s artistic director Peter Copping and Alix Long in his post, Elle reports. Elle notes that Cristina Ortiz was Lanvin’s womenswear designer when the fall 2000 collection debuted.
  • The backstory. Elle reports that Roach confirmed Zendaya’s pixie cut, which debuted at the 2026 Emmy Awards in September, was inspired by Berry. Berry later shared that interview and wrote that Zendaya “murdered the night.” USA Today also covered the recreation.

Why people care

Zendaya and Roach are known for “method dressing,” using press tour looks to echo a film’s story. Bazaar points to tennis motifs for Challengers and archival spiderweb gowns for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Bringing that approach to Halloween turned a costume into a fashion moment.

It also fits a pattern. Elle recalls that Zendaya channeled Aaliyah in 2013 and honored Cher in a vintage Bob Mackie design in 2024. Each time, the tribute works because the clothes are right, not because the face matches.

What it means for you

  • Archive is the new costume shop. You do not need the original runway piece. Search vintage dealers and resale for the right era and designer, and you get a costume you can wear again.
  • Pick one specific photo. The tribute works because it copies one moment, the July 2000 premiere, rather than a general vibe.
  • Edit like a stylist. Zendaya left out two elements of Berry’s look and it still read instantly. Keep the pieces that make it recognizable and drop the rest.
  • LA has the inventory. Vintage shops on Melrose and in the Valley, plus resale apps, carry Y2K designer pieces. Start with the house and the season, then search.

Our take (opinion)

This is the smartest kind of Halloween look: a fashion history lesson you can wear. It cost Roach access, not a prosthetics team, and it reminds everyone why archive pulls are the most valuable skill a stylist has right now. Expect Y2K Lanvin searches to spike, and expect the Dune: Part Three press tour, which Elle says is just starting, to bring more references.
