Both coasts vote Tuesday. Eileen Otte Ford would tell you to treat it like a booking.
Darlings, the candy wrappers have been swept up and both coasts are now staring at the same calendar square: Tuesday, Nov. 3. Los Angeles chooses a mayor; New York chooses a governor. In between, Manhattan said goodbye to a thirty-night residency, a Queens tenant discovered she had been heating the neighbors for a decade, and an Angeleno simply wanted a sandwich. Our lens, as ever, belongs to Eileen Otte Ford, who co-founded Ford Models in 1946 and, per the Associated Press, “demanded professionalism from her models,” going so far as to fire those “with a taste for late-night revelry.” We forgive her that last part. The rest is the week’s brief.
New York: the polls, the Garden and the bill
A record-setting early vote. Early voting closed Sunday, and CBS New York reports that the city’s Board of Elections counted an unofficial 690,526 ballots, led by Brooklyn (219,536) and Manhattan (188,434), with more than 1.7 million cast statewide. The race is Gov. Kathy Hochul against Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, and both are running on affordability. “We are leaving no stone unturned because this is a turnout election,” Blakeman said. Hochul, asked whether the Bills or she would win by more, answered, “Oh, that is a tough one. Well, we’re already up 10, so it’s probably the Bills.” The law professor J.C. Polanco told the station that early turnout ran “anywhere from 62% to 65%” above four years ago. On r/nyc, the Halloween-themed early-voting sticker and temporary tattoo got its own fan thread.
The Garden lowers the curtain. Harry Styles closed his sold-out, 30-night “Together, Together” residency at Madison Square Garden on Halloween. MSG Entertainment says Knicks captain Jalen Brunson presented Styles with a commemorative banner for the rafters, a “Defining Moments” exhibit opened on the sixth-floor concourse, and more than half a million fans from every state and 79 countries attended across the ten-week run, which began Aug. 26. The final setlist included a cover of “Psycho Killer.” The tour moves to stadiums in 2027, starting April 2 in Phoenix.

The Eileen Otte Ford verdict: thirty nights across ten weeks, and a banner at the end of it. That is the discipline she prized. “I create a look and I create a style,” she told People in 1983. A residency is the same idea with a light rig.
The bill that wasn’t hers. The r/nyc thread with the loudest groan of recognition was FOX 5 New York’s exclusive on Nicole Niceforo, a Queens tenant who spent ten years paying for the apartment directly above hers because the electricity bills had been switched. “For ten years, I was afraid to use my air conditioning,” she told reporter Kelly Kennedy. Con Edison admitted the error in writing and has issued more than six thousand dollars in refunds, but only for six years, citing its six-year limit on billing adjustments. The lesson New Yorkers took from it: read the meter number on the bill, not just the total.

And the new night out. Bloomberg’s piece on the city’s cavernous all-in-one venues, summarized on r/nyc as spaces that “have become all-in-one destinations for dining, karaoke and line dancing,” had nightlife people debating whether one roof is a convenience or a cage. Our answer: a good night has at least two addresses.
Los Angeles: a dead heat and a twenty-dollar feeling
The mayor’s race goes to the wire. The Los Angeles Times reports that Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilmember Nithya Raman are in a dead heat in the latest Berkeley IGS/L.A. Times poll, with a fifth of those surveyed still undecided. “The question that the race comes down to, especially for undecided voters, is whether to stick with an unsatisfying status quo, or take the risk with a relatively unknown quantity who could make things better or worse,” said Dan Schnur, who teaches political communications at USC and UC Berkeley. Loyola Marymount’s Fernando Guerra framed it as symbolism: “do I want to vote for the past or vote for the future?” The winner presides over the 2028 Olympics. Vote centers are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. PT on Tuesday, and any L.A. County voter may use any center.
The sticker, reviewed. On r/LosAngeles, a post titled “New LA County ‘I Voted’ sticker dropped at voting centers. Because the really scary thing is not voting.” turned a piece of adhesive into the weekend’s accessory. Fear, it turns out, is a get-out-the-vote strategy. Darling, it works.
The sandwich heard round the city. The shortest, most-agreed-with post on r/LosAngeles was titled simply “Everything is so expensive.” Its entire body: “I just wanted someone to make me a sandwich.” The comments became a referendum on lunch prices. Both campaigns have been speaking to the same mood: Raman told reporters last week that under this administration “Angelenos pay more and get less,” while Bass has promoted her record on crime and affordable housing, per the Times.
The towers, tagged again. “Graffiti is back up on the towers…. The world is healing.” read a r/LosAngeles gallery of the stalled Oceanwide Plaza downtown, where a court-ordered cleanup had been under way. The Real Deal had walked the site after the Oct. 20 deadline and called the cleanup “a split decision,” noting that some tags appeared to be new. Commenters split, too, which is the point of a skyline: everyone has an opinion and nobody owns it.
Halloween, in the rain. A Cinespia regular reported that John Carpenter’s The Thing at Hollywood Forever went ahead as billed, “rain or shine,” calling it a “fun night in the cemetery despite rain and some bad communication.” Another thread, “How was your Halloween, despite the rain?”, asked whether trick-or-treaters thinned out. The consensus: fewer houses, more umbrellas, the same costumes.
The Eileen Otte Ford verdict: “Models are a business, and they have to treat themselves as a business,” she told the Toronto Star in 1988, “which means they have to take care of themselves and give up all the young joys.” Swap “models” for “voters” and you have this week’s civic advice. Check your ballot, check your bill, then go out.
The superintelligence read
Feed the week’s threads to a pattern-matching engine and the signal is the price of ordinary life. The sandwich, the switched electric bill, the stalled towers and both coasts’ affordability campaigns are one conversation in four outfits. The posts that traveled furthest were short, specific and verifiable: a number on a bill, a line on a menu, a sticker on a lapel. Mrs. Ford, who told Life in 1970 of her future stars that “there’s a cockiness to them,” would recognize the pattern. Clarity is charisma. So is showing up on Tuesday.
