Eileen Ford said she created a look and a style. This week, one coast stood in line for one.
Darlings, a Sunday sermon from the patron saint of polish. Eileen Ford, who founded Ford Models with her husband Jerry in 1946, never pretended taste was an accident. “I create a look and I create a style,” she told People in 1983. Her daughter Katie later said her mother’s greatest thrill was spotting a model in the daily course of life. So that is today’s lens on both coasts: who is creating a style, and who is merely standing in line for one?
New York: the line is the new velvet rope
The city cannot stop queuing. 34th Street Magazine this month catalogued the phenomenon: blocks-long lines for Mimi’s Frozen Yogurt in Soho, crowds at dawn for Butterfield Market’s Dot Cakes, and a TikTok caption it quotes that every New Yorker has thought: “does no one in nyc have a job???” The writer’s diagnosis is that the line itself has become proof, a sign that this is the place and the moment.

The West Village is the front line. Per the stories trending on X, the neighborhood is arguing with itself about nostalgia versus the hype queues outside spots like Dante, the Hudson Street martini room. On Reddit, r/AskNYC is running a thread titled “What’s your perfect day in the west village area??”, which tells you everything: people want the Village, they just do not want to wait an hour to be photographed in it.

The Ford verdict: Mrs. Ford spotted her stars on the sidewalk, not in the queue. Her agency was known for demanding professionalism, and she had little patience for models who preferred late-night revelry to the work. The modern translation: book the reservation, walk to the place nobody is filming, and let the line be someone else’s content.
A cinema farewell. Variety reports that AMC Kips Bay 15 is set to close on Jan. 3, 2027, and ABC7 New York reports that AMC’s chief executive, Adam Aron, has urged NYU Langone to keep the theater open. “AMC Theatres does not want to go. Not one little bit,” Aron said. Go see something there while you can; a neighborhood screen is a style, too.

And next Sunday: the New York City Marathon runs Nov. 1, which means the sidewalks of Brooklyn and First Avenue will host the only line in town worth standing in: the one cheering strangers home.
Los Angeles: the Bowl, the parade and the runoff
My Chemical Romance made history at the Hollywood Bowl. Hoodline reports the band opened a five-night residency for the 20th anniversary of The Black Parade, which the venue describes as the first time any act has played five shows there. The opener ran 45 minutes late because of rain, then delivered the full album in order, with pyro, fireworks and costumed performers, as Rolling Stone described it. The final nights are Oct. 30, with The Used, and Halloween, with Thrice opening, per Consequence. Gerard Way has told fans, “You guys deserve another record, and we’d love to make it.” That, darling, is creating a style and then having the discipline to stage it for 20 years.

The costume question. On r/AskLosAngeles, a thread titled “Halloween things to do in LA?” is collecting plans for the week, and the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval on Santa Monica Boulevard on Oct. 31 remains the free, all-comers answer. Our advice, in the Ford manner: one excellent look beats three rushed ones.

The civic undercurrent. Per the stories trending on X, the Nov. 3 runoff for mayor between Karen Bass and Nithya Raman is the conversation Angelenos keep having between parties. Whatever your vote, cast it early and arrive at the carnaval with a clear conscience.
The Sunday rule
Mrs. Ford built an empire on the idea that style is a decision, made daily, with discipline. Both coasts are proving her right this week: the band that rehearsed for two decades sells out the Bowl, and the crowd that waits for an algorithm waits in the cold. Create the look. Skip the line. You can just tell.
