When was the first Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show?
August 1995, at the Plaza Hotel in New York, introduced by Stephanie Seymour (Wikipedia). The timing was not an accident. Two months later, the parent company sold a 16 percent stake to the public on the New York Stock Exchange, and Seymour rang the closing bell (Wikipedia; Vox). Marketing chief Ed Razek later recalled, “I think we had two cameras.” The next morning, he said, it was worldwide news (Elle).
The night the internet showed up
In 1999 the company bought a Super Bowl ad to announce a webcast of the show. More than two million people tried to watch online (Wikipedia; Elle). Razek said the picture was “about the size of two postage stamps.” That same year, Gisele Bündchen and Heidi Klum made their debuts.

- ABC took the pitch three minutes into the first meeting, Razek recalled (Elle). The show moved from Valentine’s season to the Christmas run-up, and drew more than twelve million viewers, its highest ever (Vox). Why was it called the sexiest night on television?
It was the brand’s own slogan. Victoria’s Secret filed “The Sexiest Night on Television” as a US trademark, and the phrase rode the CBS years (Trademarkia, USPTO serial 85454742; CNN, 2014). Wings, the Fantasy Bra, and pop stars live on the runway turned a catalog into a holiday special.
Why was the show cancelled?
The 2018 broadcast drew about 3.3 million viewers. After that year’s controversy over casting comments, Razek resigned in August 2019, and in November 2019 the company confirmed the show was cancelled, citing low viewership and little sales lift (Wikipedia).
The 2026 comeback: Bella opens, Gisele haunts
On Sunday, October 18, 2026, the show streamed free on YouTube from Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles, with KATSEYE, Megan Moroney, Megan Thee Stallion and Tate McRae performing (YouTube Blog). Bella Hadid opened in flower-covered wings, unannounced (Page Six; Harper’s Bazaar). Gisele was supposed to open. A source told Us Weekly she broke her foot (Us Weekly). She appeared on pre-taped video instead, ending with: “You’re going to be seeing more of me real soon” (The Blast).
