The Pulse: LA’s Mayoral Dead Heat, New York’s Four-Bedroom Status Symbol and Eileen Otte Ford’s Eye for Value

Eileen Otte Ford could spot value in the daily course of life. This week, two cities are learning to do the same.

Darlings, Eileen Otte Ford had a talent the rest of us can only rent. Her daughter Katie told the Associated Press that her mother’s “greatest thrill was to spot a model in the daily course of life.” She could read a room, a face and a future in one glance. This Thursday, both coasts are doing the same thing with numbers: reading a poll, a floor plan and a restaurant’s ownership papers, and deciding who is really winning.

Los Angeles: a dead heat, five days out

The poll that changed the mood. NBC Los Angeles reports that a new Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll, co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times, has Mayor Karen Bass and Councilmember Nithya Raman tied at 40 percent each, with 19 percent undecided. The survey ran online Oct. 19 to 25 among 2,197 likely voters, with a margin of error of about three points. In September, the same poll had Raman ahead, 39 percent to 28. Watch the voters who backed Spencer Pratt in the June primary: they now favor Bass 41 percent to 14, with 45 percent still undecided.

The candidates, in their own words. Bass, whose unfavorable rating in the poll stands at 65 percent, told NBC Los Angeles: “In my four years, I have made mistakes, but we have laid a very strong foundation to go into the future.” Homeless encampments remain voters’ top concern, named by 43 percent. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The comment section is campaigning, too. On r/LosAngeles, a post quoting Raman, “I’m a capitalist and I’m also a Democratic Socialist…we need to make sure capitalism works without harm to workers… to poor people,” has drawn more than 3,000 upvotes and over 1,200 comments. Meanwhile, r/AskLosAngeles is having the gentler conversations a city has when it is deciding who it wants to be: “Angelenos, what is your realistic dream neighborhood?”, “What do you do for a living?” and, inevitably, “Fun things to do on Halloween in LA that don’t include drinking/partying?”

The Ford verdict: Mrs. Ford said of the girls who would make it, “There’s a cockiness to them… They’re just going to be good and you can just tell it.” Los Angeles has not decided which candidate has that quality. With one in five voters undecided, neither has the city.

New York: the new status symbol is a bedroom

Four bedrooms, please. Curbed’s Matthew Sedacca reports that developers are suddenly building family-size condos. Citing Marketproof data, he counts 17 of 171 accepted condo proposals since 2024, roughly 10 percent, in which half or more of the units have four bedrooms or more, compared with 28 of 744, under 4 percent, from 2015 to 2023. At the Myles in Chelsea, 18 of 22 units have four or five bedrooms; “It really does almost feel like a suburban home,” the broker Nicole Hechter told him. The appraiser Jonathan Miller supplied the economics: “We’re no longer building smaller apartments because the math doesn’t work.” Curbed’s own summary was the line of the week: “the real way to flaunt wealth in the city, which is by simply having a large family.”

New Yorkers have seen this movie. The r/nyc thread on the story collected 168 upvotes and a chorus of veterans. “So basically a Classic Six or Seven, aka the status marker in nyc since the 1940s lol,” wrote one. Another confessed: “If I go over to a friend’s place and see they have a second bedroom, I immediately think ‘damn, Steve is doing better than I thought.’” A third summed up the city’s standards: “We live in a city where windows/natural light is marketed as an amenity!”

The dining room is shrinking. Bitterfool, working from federal labor data, reports that New York State had 48,928 restaurants and bars in the first quarter of 2026, down from 50,856 a year earlier: a net loss of 1,928, or 3.8 percent, the steepest decline in 36 years of records. Manhattan lost a net 204 places but added 3,166 jobs, while the other four boroughs lost a net 898 places, or 6.1 percent. Melissa Fleischut of the New York State Restaurant Association called it, via Bloomberg, “death by a thousand cuts.” On Oct. 28, CBS New York carried the warning to television with Andrew Rigie of the NYC Hospitality Alliance, and r/nyc answered with more than 240 comments.

And now, a map of who owns your brunch. Fast Company reports that a developer named Davie Liebowitz has built a site, ownedby.nyc, that tracks just over 5,000 New York eateries and flags the 28 percent backed by private equity or venture capital; Roark Capital alone accounts for 842 locations. “What initially inspired me to create it was walking around Manhattan on the weekends and seeing all the lines for different restaurants,” he said. He plans to expand to San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The Ford verdict: Ford Models itself was sold in 2007 to an investment firm, Stone Tower Equity Partners, as the AP noted. Mrs. Ford understood better than anyone that a beloved name and its owner are two different things. Knowing which is which is simply good taste.

The superintelligence read

A superintelligence watching both cities this week would see one pattern: people are demanding to see the books. Angelenos are refreshing polls; New Yorkers are reading floor plans as wealth charts and looking up who owns the restaurant with the line around the block. The data was always there. What changed is that ordinary people now have tools to read it in seconds.

That is Eileen Otte Ford’s gift, distributed. She spotted value in the daily course of life before anyone else did. In 2026, a voter, a renter and a diner can do it too, provided they look before they line up.
