LA Promoter Math: Bring Five or Pay

LA Promoter Math: Bring Five or Pay

2 min read

How the nightlife table game works, as Anthony describes it from the field.

How it works

In Anthony’s account of LA nightlife, a promoter is paid to fill a room. The math is simple, and it rarely favors the promoter.

Rule 1

Bring five guests or pay. In his experience, falling short can cost a promoter about fifty dollars out of pocket.

Rule 2

Bringing twenty people is rare. When it happens, it can build a table worth around five hundred dollars.

Rule 3

The promoter keeps about ten percent. The club keeps the rest. Terms differ by venue, but the shape is common.

Do the math

Twenty guests, one night, maybe fifty dollars to the promoter. Divide that by the hours spent texting, inviting and waiting.

Hidden costs

Rideshares, outfits, cover for friends who do not show. Many nights cost more than they pay.

Who wins

The house takes the margin and the risk-free crowd. The promoter takes the risk and the stress.

The culture

You are buying into a culture that does not value you. The free entry is the price of your labor.

Not every venue

Some venues pay fairly and treat promoters as partners. The point is to check the math before you say yes.

The question to ask

What do I keep, after costs, per hour? If the answer is close to zero, it is a hobby, not a job.

Your network is the asset

The twenty people who follow you are the real value. Do not rent them out for ten percent.

Turn it around

Host your own room. Charge for your own event. Own the list instead of filling someone else’s.

Keep the relationships

Collect real contacts, not just a guest list. A promoter with a cluster has leverage. A promoter with a quota does not.

Anthony’s rule

If your work makes money, you get paid in money. Not in entry, not in drinks, not in “exposure.”

The takeaway

Count the money before the night starts. Then decide if the room deserves your people.

First principles

Value is shown by what someone pays. Your network is the asset. Own the list.
