The 3x Rule: Every Expense Should Bring Three Back

The 3x Rule: Every Expense Should Bring Three Back

2 min read

Spend fifty getting ready for an event, and it should lead to a job worth one hundred fifty.

The rule

A healthy expense brings back three times its cost. Anything less is a cost, not an investment.

The example

Spend fifty dollars on nails, hair or an outfit for an event. That event should lead to a job worth one hundred fifty.

Why three?

One times gets your money back. Two covers your time. Three is where you actually grow.

Count everything

Include rides, parking, tickets, drinks and the hours you spend. A free event is never free.

Count the hours

If you spend five hours at an event, add what those hours would have earned you at your rate.

Track the return

Write down where each paid job came from. After three months, you will know which rooms pay and which ones only cost.

Lagging returns

Some returns take weeks. Give each event a window, like ninety days, then judge it.

The exception

Rest, family and health do not need a 3x return. This rule is for money spent chasing work.

A business rule too

Businesses compare return on investment the same way. A marketing spend that does not return more than it costs gets cut.

The trap

Spending to look successful at rooms that never hire you. Over a year, that can cost thousands.

The fix

Cut the zero-return rooms. Double down on the ones that pay. Your calendar becomes a portfolio.

Raise your odds

Go with a plan: three people you want to meet, one ask you will make and a follow-up within 48 hours.

Anthony’s rule

Every dollar should bring three back. Your appearance is an expense. Make it an investment.

Teach it to your cluster

When your friends track the same rule, they bring each other into paying rooms. The cluster compounds.

The takeaway

Before you spend, ask what it should bring back. Then measure it.

First principles

One times is break-even. Three times is growth. Track the return or you are just spending.
