Beauty in Los Angeles has a lot of options and a lot of marketing. Before you book a facial, injectable, or laser treatment, it helps to know who is allowed to perform it and what to ask. This guide starts with the rules, then lists places to consider, with rounded public review ratings we read on Nov 4, 2026. We do not endorse any business. Ratings reflect other customers’ experiences, move daily, and are only a starting point.
Not medical advice. Cosmetic procedures carry risks. Talk with a licensed medical professional about your own situation.
Step 1: Understand what a med spa is
The Medical Board of California says that medical spa procedures that are the practice of medicine must be performed by or under the supervision of a physician, and that the business must be owned by a physician. Cosmetologists cannot inject or use lasers. The Board’s tips include:
- Ask who performs your procedure and check their license. Use the Board’s license verification page for physicians; nurses and physician assistants are verified through their own boards, the Board of Registered Nursing (rn.ca.gov) and the Physician Assistant Board (pab.ca.gov).
- Know who supervises. Registered nurses and physician assistants should be supervised by a physician who is immediately reachable.
- Ask about complications. What can go wrong, and how are emergencies handled?
- Be wary of very low prices and high-pressure sales.
Step 2: Ask five questions on the first call
- Who will perform my treatment, and what is their license?
- Who is the supervising physician, and are they on site or reachable?
- What are the risks, downtime, and total cost?
- What happens if something goes wrong?
- Can I have a consultation first, without committing?

How to read a rating
- A large count (hundreds) is a stronger signal than a perfect score with a small count.
- Read recent comments about the specific service you want.
- Look at how the business responds to complaints.
- Photos tell you more than adjectives.
Budget and timing
Ask for the full price in writing, including consultation, products, and follow-ups. Allow downtime before events: do not book a new procedure the week of a wedding. Our LA skincare rules and blowout guide cover the at-home basics.

When something feels off
It is fine to walk out of a consultation. If a business pressures you, that is useful information.
