Couture Was Called Dead. Versace Just Called the Bluff.

Atelier Versace is coming back to the runway. The house will show haute couture during Paris Couture Week in January 2027, its first dedicated couture runway show since July 2016, and the first full couture collection from creative officer Pieter Mulier (Designscene). Versace confirmed the plan in a statement shared with WWD. Paris Couture Week runs January 25 to 28, 2027, and the exact date and venue have not been announced yet.

Why is Atelier Versace returning now?

Mulier officially took the job on July 1, 2026, and Versace now sits inside the Prada Group. Designscene reports that Prada Group CEO Andrea Guerra said on the group’s nine-month results call that the integration was going well and that the creative team had moved into developing finished product. Through the runway hiatus, Versace kept making couture privately for clients and red carpets. January is when the public finally sees what Mulier does with the house’s codes.

Versace isn’t alone

Vogue calls it “The Great Couture Comeback” (Vogue, Oct. 29). Hermès will debut couture in January 2027. Balenciaga returned to the couture calendar in July 2021 for the first time since 1968. Vogue also reports that Celine is developing couture and that Indian couturier Gaurav Gupta opened his first permanent couture atelier in Paris this month.

Why the rush? Globaldata’s Neil Saunders told Vogue that couture helps luxury houses “bring back a sense of elusiveness.” His read: “Couture can be a counterbalance to that, it throws a halo around a label.” Marissa Lepor of The Sage Group added that heritage brands “need to proactively maintain their cultural resonance and multi-generational appeal.”

Couture is the opposite of the scroll. It’s slow, handmade and fitted to one person, and that scarcity is exactly what the biggest houses are betting on. The same rule applies on the street level: in LA nightlife, the look that gets remembered is the one built for one night and one person, not the one everyone already owns.
