The low rise is back, and it flew into the Valley. On Tuesday night, True Religion and Baby Phat staged a runway show for their first collaboration inside the Silver Air hangar at Van Nuys Airport’s new terminal in Los Angeles, complete with a private jet (Vogue, Oct. 28). Vogue reports that Yume and Justine Skye performed, Jaleel White was in the crowd, and Baby Phat founder Kimora Lee held court aboard the plane.
What’s in the True Religion x Baby Phat collection?
Per Vogue, every bottom is low-rise, from bootcut and baggy jeans to a micro skirt, paired with shrunken baby tees, satin bombers and plenty of crystals.
Kimora Lee, in her own words
“It was always about aspiration,” Lee told Vogue. A former Chanel model under Karl Lagerfeld, she launched Baby Phat in 1999 and reacquired it in 2019. “I am a Chanel girl, through and through,” she said. “Normally, you don’t sell a brand and then come back.” Her advice to other founders: “If you made it once, you can make it again.” She added: “I want my girls to see powerful women, beautiful women, women of all ages, who keep going and growing.”
True Religion’s chief marketing officer, Kristen D’Arcy, told Vogue: “When people say to us, ‘Oh, back in the heyday of True Religion,’ well, the heyday is now.”
Why it matters for LA nightlife
Vogue reports that the campaign stars Aniya Harvey and Kayda Bosse in a homage to MTV’s Making the Video. Y2K is now a generation’s discovery rather than its memory, and an airport hangar runway with live performers is the kind of night that turns a product drop into an event. That’s the crossover we cover: fashion staged like a party, built for the camera.
