The hook

Chappell Roan can fill stadiums. This week she chose a room of about 6,000 at LA’s Shrine Auditorium, turned it into a gilded red-velvet ballroom, and filled the bill with drag, pop stars and surprise guests for two nights of fundraising. Fans have been uploading performance clips to YouTube all week, and on Oct. 24 WWD broke down her stage shoes. Here is what happened, what she wore, and what LA can take from it.

What happened

  • The event. The Super Graphic Spectacular ran two nights at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall, Oct. 21 and 22, to mark the first anniversary of the Midwest Princess Project, the nonprofit Roan founded in 2025 to support transgender youth and LGBTQ+ communities, The Guardian reported.
  • The cause. The Guardian and WWD both report the project has raised more than $800,000 and supported more than 60 organizations in its first year. The Hollywood Reporter says all net proceeds from both shows, sponsored by Cash App and Visa, go to the project.
  • The guests. Night one featured Lola Young, Tinashe and a surprise appearance by Christina Aguilera, who sang “Beautiful” and duetted with Roan on “Coffee,” per The Guardian. Night two brought Caroline Polachek, MUNA and surprise guest PinkPantheress, per THR. Comedian Caleb Hearon hosted.
  • The set. THR describes a roughly 70-minute headline set on night two that opened with “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl” and closed with her remix of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Expectations” and “Pink Pony Club,” with her mother watching from the mezzanine.
  • The shoes. WWD reports Roan wore champagne metallic Jimmy Choo Vanessa pumps, stilettos with lace-up ankle detailing, with a moss-green duster robe embroidered with a foliage motif. She also paired them with a gold-embellished two-piece and a dusty pink robe.

Status: CONFIRMED. Three outlets independently covered the shows, the guests and the fundraising figure.

Why people care, and what creators are saying

  • The underplay. THR notes that Roan drew an estimated 40,000 people per night at her Pasadena shows last year. Playing a room of about 6,000 made this an unusually intimate show.
  • Fan footage is everywhere. The YouTube channel FoxieGaspie posted a run of clips from both nights, including the live debut of her “Expectations” remix. Ryan Chau posted a 4K clip of the same song from night two.
  • The critics liked it. The Guardian’s Emma Madden called her 90-minute night-one set proof that she is “one of the greatest performers in pop.”
  • The theater is the fashion. Roan has long compared her look to drag. A stage that mixes drag performers with pop stars makes her styling the story, which is why a shoe write-up became news.

What it means for you

  • Copy the shoe, not the costume. A metallic, lace-up stiletto in a champagne tone works with a slip dress, a suit or black denim. It’s an easy Halloween-weekend upgrade that you’ll wear again in December.
  • Shop the look on a budget. Jimmy Choo’s Vanessa is the exact pair. If that’s out of reach, search for “metallic lace-up stiletto” and compare heel heights; WWD describes a stiletto with ankle ties.
  • The robe trick. An embroidered duster or long robe over a simple dress is the most wearable idea from these shows. Vintage shops on Melrose and in Silver Lake are good hunting grounds.
  • Give where she’s giving. The Midwest Princess Project’s page is on Roan’s official site if you want to support the cause directly.
  • Watch the Shrine. Big stars choosing small LA rooms for one-off nights is a trend worth tracking. Sign up for venue newsletters, not just artist alerts.

Our take (opinion)

From first principles, a benefit show only works if people would buy the ticket even without the cause. Roan built a night people would have paid for anyway, then pointed the money at the cause. That is the right order.

The fashion lesson is the same. The costumes were big, but the piece that traveled was a pair of shoes anyone can buy. If metallic lace-up pumps start showing up at Halloween parties across LA this weekend, you’ll know where they came from.
