Forget the Angel Debate. LA Already Picked Its Angels.

Forget the Angel Debate. LA Already Picked Its Angels.

Darlings, angels have been the most argued-about job title in fashion for a month. Los Angeles settled the question quietly, on a runway in West Hollywood, with two women we already knew.

Ava Kortman, our Model of the Year, and Emily Sophie Christine, our first runner-up, both walked as angels for Krissy King at LAFW at The Bureau. Neither of them needed us to say so. They said it themselves.

Ava: black feathers, gold trim

On Oct. 20, Ava posted her look with a caption that does all the work: “Angel for the @krissykingthelabel runway at Los Angeles Fashion Week.” She credited hair and makeup to Miguel Arroyo (@bymiguelarroyo).

Our camera was at the end of the runway during The Finale on Saturday, Oct. 17. Black feather wings and a gold two-piece, with the label’s name glowing on the screen behind her. She held the pose long enough for every lens in the front row.

Emily: “Angels in Los Angeles.”

Four days later, Emily posted her own angel moment from West Hollywood, captioned simply “Angels in Los Angeles.” She tagged @krissykingthelabel and credited her makeup to Soléa By Darlyn (@soleabydarlyn).

We have not yet matched a frame of Emily in her wings from our Finale set, so for that look, go to her post. Our own photograph of her below is from the night before, when she walked for Sewreffic at The Opening. Her full story is in our interview with Emily.

The Ford rule, on our grid

All week, our red tiles have asked one question, borrowed from Eileen Otte Ford, who told People in 1983: “I create a look and I create a style.” In The Pulse, we asked who is creating a style and who is just standing in line for one. In The DM She Fumbled, we asked what Ford’s standard of discretion means in the creator era.

Two angels, one label, and their own captions doing the talking. Ford spent her career spotting faces before anyone else did. We like to think she would have signed both.
