The First Meet-and-Greet in New York: The Safety Rules the Forums Agree On

2 min read

For adults 21+ dating in New York, the first meeting is where judgment matters most. We read the threads where sugar-dating members trade advice, and the same rules came up again and again.

Video call before you meet

In a widely shared r/sugarbabyhustle post, the author calls a video call “non negotiable”: it confirms the person looks like their photos and is real (Reddit, r/sugarbabyhustle). If someone refuses, the advice is simple: don’t meet.

Public place only, and never a hotel first

The same post says a first meeting is “never at his home, your home, a hotel room.” A thread on r/SugarBABYonlyforum puts it as Rule #1: never do a first meet-and-greet at a hotel, however good the offer sounds (Reddit, r/SugarBABYonlyforum). In Manhattan that means a busy lounge, a hotel lobby bar with people around, or a café, not a room upstairs.

Coffee or drinks, not a long dinner

Forum members suggest a short meeting “either person can leave within 45 minutes.” New York date guides say the same: drinks are easy to extend and easy to end, while dinner locks you in for 90 minutes (RoamRecs).

Tell a friend and get yourself home

A university safety guide recommends telling at least one friend where you’re going and whom you’re meeting, and handling your own transportation (University of South Carolina). Forum posters add a code-word text that means “call me with an excuse to leave,” and a “home safe” message afterward.

Keep your details private

Your home address, workplace and legal name can wait until real trust exists.

The bottom line

Class and caution go together. The best New York rooms are the ones where you can leave whenever you choose.
