The Founder’s Rift: Climb the Ladder, Find Your Team

The Founder’s Rift: Climb the Ladder, Find Your Team

2 min read

Before a founder picks a market, they should know what kind of builder they are. This quiz borrows two old Roman ideas. In Virgil, Jupiter promises Rome an empire without end (Aeneid 1.279). Saturn is the king of the golden age, the peaceful time people wanted to protect and restore (Aeneid 8.319 to 325; Eclogue 4). The tier names borrow from the rift ladder in Blizzard’s game Diablo III. This is a reflection exercise, not a scientific personality test.

Every answer earns Rift Points (RP). Clear a tier to unlock the next one. At the end you get your Team (Jupiter or Saturn), your Mission, your Vision, your 3 Core Pillars and your Tagline, plus a ladder rank.

  • Team Jupiter: expansion. Building a world without end.
  • Team Saturn: maintenance. Protecting the golden age you already have.

Neither team is wrong. Knowing which one you are is the point.

Tier 1 · Normal Rift (10 RP each)

  1. What do you make, in one sentence?
  2. Who was the first person who paid you, or showed up for you?
  3. What city do you build from, and why there?

Tier 2 · Torment Rift (25 RP each). Jupiter or Saturn?

  1. You get a windfall tomorrow. Do you open a new market (J) or make what you have bulletproof (S)?
  2. A rival copies your best idea. Do you invent the next one (J) or defend the original (S)?
  3. Do you hire people better than you (J) or people loyal to how you do it (S)?
  4. Pick a word: frontier (J) or legacy (S).

Tier 3 · Greater Rift 50 (50 RP each). Mission

  1. What problem would still bother you if nobody ever paid you to fix it?
  2. Who gets hurt if you quit?
  3. Finish this: “We exist so that ___.”

Tier 4 · Greater Rift 100 (75 RP each). Vision

  1. It’s ten years from now and you won. Describe one ordinary Tuesday.
  2. What will people say you made obvious?

Tier 5 · Greater Rift 150 (100 RP each). Pillars and Tagline

  1. Name three things you will never trade away. These become your Core Pillars.
  2. Say your brand in six words or fewer. This becomes your Tagline.
  3. Unpopular opinion: What do you believe about your industry that most people in it disagree with?

Legendary Drop (bonus 150 RP)

  1. Who should we interview next, and why?

Scoring

  • Max score: 880 RP (30 + 100 + 150 + 150 + 300, plus the 150 bonus).
  • Team: whichever letter you picked most in Tier 2. A 2-2 tie makes you a Hybrid: the Builder-Keeper.
  • Ladder ranks: under 300 RP: Seasonal Hero. 300 to 599 RP: Paragon. 600 RP and up: Rift Guardian, with a featured spot on the Founders board.
