Weekend Buzz · Oct 24–25

Three conversations ran the weekend: who gets to wear couture, which TikTok format moves clothes, and who decides what counts as borrowing.

Fashion did not take the weekend off. Between Friday and Sunday, three conversations ran across TikTok, Reddit and the trade press, and each one is a question Gen Z is answering in real time.

1. Couture went to the high street

Elie Saab x H&M launched on Oct 22. Style Pulse reported queues on Regent Street, the emerald cape top selling out, and the label’s first menswear: tuxedo tailoring, monogram silk separates and a stand-collar leather jacket. Elsewhere, The Hollywood Reporter said select Gap x Victoria Beckham pieces sold out within the first hour of Friday’s drop.

2. The ceiling fan became a stylist

Trends by Masterhooks counted five ceiling-fan outfit-transition videos at more than 5.9 million combined views on Oct 25: the creator films from overhead and every pass of a blade hides a cut and reveals a new look. Vtrends lists it as the most-copied format of the week, ahead of Halloween costume reveals and pumpkin-head fall fits.

3. Cardigans, chocolate and burgundy

Submarine.ai’s weekly brand-channel data shows “cardigan” as TikTok’s fastest-rising fashion topic, and Style Pulse calls tonal chocolate brown with a burgundy accent “the easiest current colour story,” with dark romance (velvet, lace, deep berry) balanced by denim or flats.

4. Reddit asked: appreciation or appropriation?

Fashion Times reported a Reddit thread compiling Kim Kardashian’s recent archival looks drawn from Chinese dress, including a Tom Ford-era Yves Saint Laurent gown and a cheongsam-inspired Roberto Cavalli piece. The verdict, per the outlet: there wasn’t one.

5. Musical chairs at the houses

Puck reported that Martine Rose has signed to replace Pierpaolo Piccioli at Balenciaga; Kering has not confirmed it. WWD reported Louis Vuitton named Tiffany’s Hector Muelas chief brand creative officer, effective Nov. 1.

6. Who decides best dressed?

Teen Vogue put the Academy Museum Gala’s red carpet to a reader vote. Fan polls are now a second front row, and the people voting are the same people buying.

We're asking New York's stylists, designers and makeup artists to weigh in. Take the interview and tell us where you stand.
