The hook
The richest man in fashion has one investment regret, and it is not a fashion house. “I sold my Netflix stake too early; it has since multiplied tenfold!” Bernard Arnault told WWD, in an interview published Oct. 27 for his John B. Fairchild Honor for Lifetime Achievement. That night, at the WWD Honors in New York, he collected the award. Here is what he said, on the record.
What happened
- The honor. WWD gave Arnault, chairman and CEO of LVMH, its 2026 John B. Fairchild Honor for Lifetime Achievement at the WWD Honors on Oct. 27. Other honorees that night included Haider Ackermann of Tom Ford (Womenswear Designer of the Year) and Michael Rider of Céline (Menswear Designer of the Year), per WWD’s event page.
- The interview. In WWD’s Q&A with Miles Socha, Arnault said he studied at École Polytechnique from 1969 to 1971, then went home to Roubaix to work with his father. He credited the school with giving him “rigor and the ability to simplify complex problems.”
- The context. WWD also published a legacy profile titled “Bernard Arnault’s Legacy Is ‘Transforming Creativity Into Profitability’” ahead of the ceremony. In the interview, he said LVMH’s maisons together carry “more than 5,000 years of combined history, savoir-faire and artistic tradition.”
The best lines, verbatim from WWD
- On the L-word: “I don’t particularly like that word. It is too often associated, pejoratively, with frivolity, superficiality, uselessness, with ‘bling-bling.’ That is not what we do.”
- On time horizons: “You cannot run heritage like that with a quarterly mindset. You run it the way a family runs its own home: thinking in generations, not in quarters.”
- On ideas: “The idea matters, but anyone can have an idea; what matters most is the execution of that idea.”
- On store visits: “Some store managers joke that I should be hired as director of visual merchandising, after the changes I have regularly suggested in our stores.”
Why people care
Arnault controls a group whose houses include Louis Vuitton, Dior, Celine, Fendi, Bulgari and Loro Piana, so his priorities shape what reaches stores worldwide. The timing is pointed: a Financial Times report republished by CNA Luxury says Europe’s top luxury groups have shed about 250 billion euros of market value this year, with LVMH’s market capitalization down 131.6 billion euros. A lifetime award in a down year reads as a statement of confidence in long-term thinking.
What it means for you
- Expect craft talk, not logo talk. When the biggest group in the business says “artisanal and creative maisons” instead of luxury, the marketing you see this holiday season will lean on savoir-faire, workshops and heritage.
- Stores are a stage. Arnault says he visits boutiques on weekends and fixes the details. If you shop on Rodeo Drive, notice the windows and the service: that is where the group says it competes.
- Read the founder’s playbook. His point about execution over ideas is advice any LA creative business can steal for free.
Our take (opinion)
The Netflix line is the headline, but the real news is the vocabulary. Arnault is quietly retiring “luxury” as a sales word in a year when shoppers are questioning prices. Whether customers buy the craft story at today’s price points is the test for 2027.
